About This Product

Note! This worksheet is to be used as a student printout with the presentation https://teachsimple.com/product/translation-of-graphs-editable-powerpoint

NOT standalone.

This worksheet is an editable Microsoft Word document that helps students to follow along the presentation. This allows students to think their own solutions before revealing the answers from the PowerPoint. Empty grids for graphs gives an opportunity to draft graphs during the lesson.

The first thing we are studying is the quadratic function f(x)=x^2 and finding its translations to all directionns; f(x)+a, f(x)-a, f(x+a), f(x-a). Students are encouraged to draft the original parabola and the translation to the same graph to see the difference. As this is editable, the teacher can remove some of the graphs in advance if it feels too much for the group. From their graphs, they can move on to building more general summary of translations.

When this is complete, the next function of study is a linear function. Even if it's actually harder to see how translations work in linear functions, when students have already developed a theory how it works with a quadratic function, they can use a linear function to figure out that this actually works for more than just one function.

The last page encourages to find out what happens when we have an exponential function.
