Verbs word search, scramble and crossword puzzle

I made this verbs puzzle set for my 2nd and 3rd graders during our grammar unit. The kids could tell me action words but had no idea what linking verbs or helping verbs were. So I put together a word search, a word scramble, and a crossword using words like run, jump, eat, sleep, play, think, is, am, are, was, were, be, being, been, have, has, had, do, does, did, can, will, would, and should. Nothing fancy — just puzzles to help the verb vocabulary finally stick.

The PDF is four pages. Three puzzles plus one answer key page. The word search works well for quiet time after recess. The scramble gets them talking because they argue about whether "think" is an action verb since you can't see it. The crossword I use for partners. I added a couple simple running stick figure and arrow drawings but nothing too busy.

Works for 2nd through 4th grade. Print and go. Sometimes I have early finishers list three action verbs and three linking verbs on the back. The kids actually ask for these now.
