This resource can be used in subjects such as Science, Environmental Science, Technology, Engineering and Earth Sciences classes. The hands-on approach in this project fosters active participation among students. They'll start by learning about the root cause of climate change and carbon cycles through online resources before proceeding towards a brainstorming session in order to think of solutions that could help rebalance our planet's atmospheric CO2 levels. Their ideas for technologies or inventions can fall into several categories like reducing greenhouse gases produced by human activities; enhancing photosynthesis to absorb more CO2; reflecting the sun's rays away from Earth; storing excess carbon emissions; or using chemistry principles to transform surplus CO2 into other forms. After choosing their solution concept within their groups or pairs, students delve deep into researching their unique idea. They will attempt to explain how their idea works, what materials are needed, and the optimal locations of implementation. For presentation purposes, students have creative control over whether to choose a poster layout or digital methods like PowerPoint slideshows and video compilations. To help keep things organized throughout the project, there’s an inclusive graphic organizer for note-taking. Additionally, an assessment rubric is provided for grading purposes and to guide the students throughout. Give your students the opportunity to learn about Genghis Khan, one of the greatest military leaders and conquerors the world has ever known. Book Jacket Book Report

This is an engaging Book Jacket Book Report for your middle school students! This book report can be genre-specific or it can be assigned to any book your students might choose to read. (For example, if you assign a genre-specific book, such as mystery or fantasy, this book report lends itself. But if you allow kids to choose any genre they are interested in, this book report works for that as well.) You can use the Book Jacket Book Report as a summative assessment after you’ve taught students about character, the elements of fiction, and how to write a summary and a short book review. I give my students 4-5 weeks to complete the project. Included in this packet are the following: --objectives and learning targets that are aligned with the Common Core Standards --detailed lesson plans --clear student-friendly directions --templates --an opportunity for students to reflect on their project and what they have learned about themselves as readers and as creators of the project --a grading sheet for teachers. Although you could easily modify this project digitally, students enjoy reading each other's book jackets (which is part of the lesson plan), and they make a great bulletin board. Titanic Social Stratification Simulation

Abandon Ship! Social Stratification Simulation Teacher Guide Intro: This is a great class period activity to introduce and/or demonstrate the pervasiveness of social stratification. Step by Step Instructions: Sort students into groups of 8. If a group has less than 8 than students may need to assume multiple roles Assign each student a role, and hand them the “handout” for their character. They will assume this role. Their objective is to secure a spot on the lifeboat. Give students a couple of minutes to read their handout and get familiar with their character. Assemble students in groups physically. Inform them they are to create a list of 5 members that will be granted access on the lifeboat. Under no circumstances will more than 5 members be allowed a spot- it would cause the raft to potentially sink. Give students a 15 minute timer to complete their list of 5. Make sure students know that they each need to share out to the group all of the details about their character. It is important that students base their decisions on the facts. After selections are made have students return to typical seats and go through the discussion questions together The slides provide a handful of reflection questions but feel free to use your own. I like to try to investigate what students chose not to share. For example, often the elementary school teacher opts not to share they are $89,000 in debt. This can start a great conversation around how societal standards invoke shame on those in difficult financial standing Notes: I often offer a couple points extra credit, or a piece of candy, or some other kind of incentive to those that gain a spot on the boat. I recommend this to boost engagement and bring more passion to the activity.
