The Constitution is a Living Document

"The Constitution is a Living Document" is a comprehensive project designed to assess students’ knowledge and understanding of Articles 1, 2, and 3, as well as 7 amendments in several ways. The project is divided into 3 sections. Section 1 covers the Constitution (Articles 1, 2, and 3) and includes an essay and analyzing news articles. Section 2 covers the Amendments and includes an essay and analyzing news articles. Section 3 includes a conclusion essay and the bibliography. Students will apply their understanding of Articles 1, 2, and 3 as well as certain amendments by finding an article about an event in the United States (either online or from a newspaper), summarizing the article, and then analyzing how this article connects to the Constitution. There are also some extra credit opportunities. Although this project stands on its own after students have studied both the Constitution and the Bill of Rights either by using a textbook or other materials, it is an excellent summative assessment for my lessons on Articles 1, 2, and 3 and The Bill of Rights Unit, both of which are sold in my store. This summative project is perfect for students in Grades 7 through 12 and can be easily modified based on grade level and can be used for all students: ELL, RSP, Gate, and regular. The most important thing about this project is how students truly internalize how the Constitution is not just some old stuffy document but really is alive in our lives and protects our rights and our democracy. I have had students come back to me when they are in high school to tell me how much they got out of this project. I have also had several students tell me they helped their immigrant parents pass the citizenship test. They were able to teach their parents about our government. My favorite is how many 8th-grade students tell me they are now interested in current events and regularly follow the news! This project is part of my unit: “Our Living Consitution” which is designed using the Into, Through, and Beyond model of lesson planning. This project can be taught independently, but it is an excellent summative assessment for all my lessons on the Constitution in my unit. The lessons in the Constitution unit can be used independently or as a supplement to what you already teach or as a whole. Through this engaging Career Exploration Project students will explore jobs in different sectors including: healthcare, education, tourism, business, medicine, and more! This project is unique as it encourages students to think creatively and research less common options for careers, instead of only the stereotypes we always talk about. So, instead of doctor in the healthcare field, what about a phlebotomist, a heart valve specialist, or a paediatric nurse? Instead of a president in the field of government, what about a speech writer, a social media expert, or a municipal clerk? There are so many varied jobs out there- and many of them students don't even know exist. Each student will be assigned one career sector. You can pick yourself, or let your students choose what they are most interested in. They will think of three of the common stereotypical jobs in that sector. Then, they will do research to discover four more unique or less common options. For each new career they think of, they must find out the education required to get that job the skills needed before you can be hired the daily activities that you will do the pay range At the end, students can pick their favourite option from the four new careers they have researched and present what they have discovered to the class. Grades to Use With: This project is great to use with high school students (in grades 8-12) in regular or special education classes. It would work well for a career and personal planning course! Teacher Guide Economic Systems Game Thank you for using this product to introduce economic systems in an engaging and memorable way! Consult the teacher instructions below to help you facilitate the game. Print the “Class Bucks” located in the folder where this instructions sheet was located. There is a pdf version and a google doc version. Each page contains 12 “bucks”. In my experience 5 “bucks” per student is enough to create a manageable but exciting classroom economy. The goal of the game is to demonstrate, in an over-simplistic way, capitalism, socialism, and communism using a rock paper scissors game that most students feel pretty competitive playing. I recommend having a very simple prize that students can buy at the end of the game if they achieve 10 or more bucks in a single round. In the past I have used treats or 5 extra credit points as incentives. For round 1 you are demonstrating capitalism. I recommend a high degree of stratification for this round. In other words, have some students start with 8 “bucks” and have others start with 1. You can use this random wheel to randomize numbers between 1 and 8. You might say “okay this is Jaylen” and then spin the wheel to see how many he starts with. The big difference here represents the stratification that is natural in capitalism. Possible for anyone to get rich, but easier if you started with more, etc. Play the round by having students wager “bucks” on a round of rock paper scissors After each round, take a minute to have the class note how many players got to 10 and how many had 0 or 1. This is typically a higher number for capitalism, which they might notice. After round 1 take a few bucks from the highest earners and give them to the lowest so everyone has at least 1 or 2. For round 2 you are showing democratic socialism. I usually have everyone start with 3, 4, or 5 and run the round again. Then I tax anyone over 6 back down to 6 and use it to try to guarantee everyone at least has 3. For round 3, I have everyone start with 4, and at the end of the round make it 4 again to demonstrate communism. Finally, review the reflection questions at the end to hit on major themes!
