Build a Tower! Phonic Game: OO
Special Resources, ELA, Special Education Needs (SEN), Language Development, Phonics, Reading, Not Grade Specific, Activities, Games

Here is an ultra fun game to help pupils learn to sound out words with both the long and short forms of OO as in moon and book. When introducing OO words, many children have particular difficulty sounding out short OO words. This game can take the stress out of learning. How to play The game involves each player having a baseboard upon which to build his/her tower. Players aim to be the first to build their tower and win! Word cards containing both long and short OO words are scattered on the table - with an 'oops' card hidden amongst them! Players take turns to choose a card. If it is read correctly, the player places it on his/her baseboard and begins to build a tower. Teachers and parents may give the child as much help as needed to read each word and turn it into a teaching opportunity. With more confident children, you can change the rules so that the card is returned face down to the table if it is not read correctly. If a player chooses the 'Oops' card, then the whole tower is wiped off the player's board and the cards are returned to the table, face down and play continues until someone manages to build their tower. Your pupils will have so much fun they will forget that they are learning! Games take the pain out of learning! Ease of preparation: The game is easy to make: simply print the baseboards and desired word cards, then cut up the word cards. Full instructions included Who can use the Build a Tower: OO game? It can be used by: Parents Teachers Tutors. What is included in the Build a Tower: OO game? 2 baseboards 2 pages of words with a mix of long and short oo sounds Instructions 1 PDF 6 pages

Athens, Sparta, Greek Democracy: Regents Global 9 CRQ + Video Lessons

Athens, Sparta, Greek Democracy: Regents Global 9 CRQ + Video Lessons
Social Studies, History, History: World, Grade 9, 10, Teacher Tools, Assessments

Regents Global 9 CRQ: Athens, Sparta, Greek Democracy + Video Lessons This product is a constructed-response question (“CRQ”) in the format of the new New York State Regents examination in Global History and Geography. The CRQ calls upon the student to examine historical sources (I use exclusively primary sources) by providing historical or geographic context, identifying the point of view, intended audience, or purpose of a document and then using the two documents in either compare-contrast, cause-effect analysis, or turning point identification. I advocate a strategy of assigning one CRQ in each unit of study in grades nine and ten without access to notes. I used this as one of the tests at the end of a unit of study. I would tell students about what kinds of documents would appear and what historical context they should be able to recall in advance. It is a challenging task for them. The first challenge for novices is to understand what it means to provide context. Faced with the question “What is the historical context of this document?”, beginners will retell what the document says. The reason for this mistake is that, since they were little kids, teachers have asked them to relate what a text means to prove they understood it. [ Read more at the Innovation blog ] Product includes: 1. Student version 2. Teacher version with suggested answers 3. Passcode to video lessons students can use to prepare the task. Documents: Excerpt, Aristotle, Athenian Constitution Excerpt, Aristotle, Cleisthenes' Reforms Excerpt, Xenophon On Spartans Excerpt, Philochorus, on Ostracism Passcode Lessons: Overview of Ancient Greece, part 1 Overview of Ancient Greece, part 2 Alexander the Great and Hellenism Greek Achievements About Innovation Passcodes Passcodes let your students access selected lessons in my own virtual classroom at InnovationAssessments.com . Lamination is optional, but recommended, as it will ensure that the game remains in good condition and can be used for many years to come! 28th Amendment Project – U.S. History Activity

28th Amendment Project – U.S. History Activity
Social Studies, History, History: USA, Government, Grade 8, 9, 10, 11, Activities, Projects

Without a doubt, history is a topic that can be easily overlooked by our students. Sometimes, it can be difficult for them to make connections with the past in a way that makes sense to them. Being able to provide students with meaningful resources is the best way to get over this learning curve. Whenever you have a social studies topic to introduce or review, you want to find engaging products that you know your students will be able to learn from. Within my store, you will find a plethora of social studies resources to utilize with your students. What You Get: This is a 28th Amendment Project. There are 10 slides in the presentation and 2 pages for the brainstorming chart, which is an editable Word document. This is an inquiry learning project that will challenge students to consider what amendment they would seek to have passed if a 28th amendment could be added. The presentation provides brief explanations and guides students through brainstorming. How To Implement This Resource: You should print off enough copies of the brainstorming chart for each student to have, so they can make notes on it as they follow along with the presentation. Encourage them to make notes on the back of the paper or on separate pieces of paper until they are sure about the amendment they think should be implemented. As you work through the presentation, you will be taking students through a brainstorming process about adding a 28th Amendment. Some things students will consider are: -- Issues that exist with how the Constitution works -- Social issues or financial issues within the country -- Which groups of people might oppose a certain amendment -- Finding reputable sources, without a motive, for their research These slides provide great opportunity for engagement and whole group discussion before students dive into their research. Allow students the opportunity to get creative and continue discussions throughout the research process. I hope you enjoy!
