This oo decodable reading book can help children develop reading fluency. With a matching PowerPoint, is ideally suited to Guided Reading. It is part of a series of highly structured decodable reading books with controlled vocab; all vocab is decodable using phonic knowledge the child already has (if read in sequence) and true irregular sight words are only slowly and gradually introduced. This book is the next in our new series for budding historians who may be older pupils and may have special needs and need a more mature storyline than cats and dogs! It follows on from our previous sets of ' Learn to Read' packs covering the 5 vowels so the pupil is expected to be able to blend 3 and 4 sounds securely and be ready to read words with /oo/. It can be used as a stand-alone decodable reading book provided a child can blend CVC/CCVC/CVCC words and has learned the sound oo. They can also be found here as a growing bundle pack with a scope and sequence. These books are best read in sequence. This book contains words with the following sounds: oo. This series has been written with the aid of one of my pupils, aged 8. He writes his ideas and draws pictures and then I formulate them into a fool-proof reading book using only decodable words. Reading Made Simple for Special Needs A 100% systematic phonic reading programme for all ages and abilities. Give your child a Head start in reading! Due to its 100% systematic nature, this reading programme is highly suitable for any child with a special need, including dyslexia (or suspected), or any other need that is causing a child to have difficulties learning to read. What makes this reading programme different? · It has its own, easy-to-download and print phonic reading books, making it accessible to many children worldwide. · Each book carefully builds on the vocabulary of those that have gone before, providing much repetition, without relying on predictable text. · Pictures aid the storyline without encouraging reading from the pictures – i.e. guessing. · The vocabulary is based on phonic families, which are introduced in a carefully planned way. · True sight words – those that cannot be sounded out - are kept to the very minimum. Most words are introduced in their phonic family wherever possible. · It is truly multisensory, using the power of the hand. We not only look at the words, but we write them too. This is powerful and has the bonus of turning the child not only into a reader but into a writer as well. Typical signs that this programme can help: · Difficulty recalling words when seen on flashcards or when reading texts, which results in no or little reading fluency · b/d letter reversal of a chronic nature – i.e. the child has not grown out of it · Difficulty ordering letters in words: E.g. top becomes pot. · Difficulty differentiating between like words: spoon/soon; back/black; sheep/sleep etc… · Difficulty tracking words across a page To help all children succeed, each phonic family is taught in two lessons, each a week in duration. This speed has been tried and tested to be the optimum speed to allow children to absorb new information without mental overload. You may find that some children need longer - but never less. Each phonic family is split into half and only 5/6 words in a family are studied each week. Activities are provided to give the child plenty of exposure to the new sound and the set of words that contain it. These activities are not hard, but simply bring the child face to face with the words, first individually, then in sentences, and finally in longer passages. We also seek to strengthen knowledge of blends and develop phonemic awareness through the activities, much needed by these learners. In all, the way that Reading Made Simple has been designed reduces the burden on the working memory, making it easier for children to learn to read. Children relax as they meet familiar words again and again. They begin to say – sometimes for the first time, ‘I can read’. With this programme, you can help a non-reader today! How long are the books? The reading books are 12 pages long. Why are these books FREE when other people's books cost so much? Are they of lesser quality? They are free as I regard the ability to read as being a fundamental right of every living person. Why should some miss out on top-quality resources because they cannot pay for them? In terms of content, they are top quality, carefully planned and sequenced to help as many children as possible get started on the phonic road to reading. Reading Made Simple — Free AR Phonics Workbook These little workbooks have been a quiet favourite with families using Reading Made Simple for some time now. Each one focuses on a single sound and prints on just one sheet of A4 paper — double-sided, folded in half to make a neat A5 booklet that children can hold and work through at their own pace. They are entirely optional. The phonics programme works perfectly well without them, but many parents and teachers find them a useful companion — either as structured practice or simply as a source of ideas to dip into when needed. Tested by real children: One 5-year-old user is quoted as having said, 'The worksheet is the best bit of my lessons!' Other parents have noted that their child likes the worksheet because 'they think it is easy'. When learning is broken down into small, achievable steps, with no curve balls to throw them off track, every child can say, 'I can read!' When I hear these reviews, I know that I have succeeded in my aim to write a phonics curriculum that can help children of all abilities learn to read and spell. These little workbooks are just one small part of what there is to offer. Please do check out the website for more information. Each workbook offers a gentle mix of activities built around the target sound. Children will read short passages that practise the new sound alongside words from sounds already taught, track and identify the sound within words to support both reading and spelling, practise spelling and sentence writing, and work through simple editing exercises where they spot and correct mistakes. These small editing tasks are particularly worthwhile — they encourage children to look carefully at words rather than guessing from context. The workbooks are particularly well-suited to younger children just beginning their phonics journey, and to older children with special educational needs who are still building their foundational reading and spelling skills. That said, they will not suit every child. Some will find them too long, others too straightforward. Use your own judgement — pick the activities that fit, leave the rest, or set them aside entirely. There is no obligation and no right or wrong way to use them. To print: print double-sided, flipping on the short edge. Fold in half to create your A5 booklet. The answer page at the back is optional. One sheet of paper. One sound. Everything a child needs to practise, consolidate and grow in confidence.

This Reading Intervention for Struggling Readers: Book 8 provides an easy-read story with four chapters, helping the pupil to begin to carry meaning from page to page and chapter to chapter. Review questions help the teacher check for comprehension. This book is the eighth in a series of books written to provide intervention for struggling readers using decodable reading books, written to build confidence and help the child attain fluency and comprehension. This book is useful for reading intervention for older pupils, maybe even 11+ who are struggling to read fluently, but who have a smattering of phonic knowledge but with gaps. It builds on the vocabulary of the books that have gone before. giving the child a familiar base on which to build. The large, clear font and short paragraphs help those with visual tracking difficulties. It follows: Book 1 CVC Words Book 2 Consonant Blends Words Book 3 More Consonant Blends Words Book 4 CK word Book 5 OO Words Book 6 Revise CK and OO with added extra basic vocabulary Book 7 Split digraphs, AI, EA and OA Who is this book for? Older pupils who can read but who have a reading age well below their chronological age and struggle to read simple text accurately and fluently, thereby lacking comprehension. It is not for pupils who are just beginning to read with phonics. Please see my Graded reading books for such pupils. It is convenient enough for parents to use with their children and for use by teachers and private tutors. Outline and steps Having secured a child's blending skills with three and four sounds in books 1 to 3, and practised CK and OO words, we now start to extend the child's ability to decode new words with either one, two or three syllables. Assess the whole time as the child reads: if the child stumbles on a word, make a note to revise that phonic sound before continuing to the next book. I find that often these children need help distinguishing between similar words, such as back and black, and by retraining the child to read accurately using these simple texts - that do not look babyish - and then rebuilding from the bottom up, much progress can be made. I thought that my pupils would look with disdain at these books. I found the opposite; they were so relieved that at last somebody had actually given them a book they could read! Simply print on A4 paper, two on a page. Cut into individual A5 pages, and staple or bind them together to make a book. Purpose These books have been written and tried and tested on some of my older pupils (mainly boys I admit), and they have proved very helpful. Most of my pupils have a dyslexic type problem, involving poor processing skills and have had years of failure. They must build a secure foundation for reading ability to build upon. These books, used as described, will help to build that foundation. I am finding an increasing number of such pupils desperate for help. You can help, too! Final ND Blend Find and Colour Phonics Worksheet

This final blend _ND fun, Find and Color worksheet for final blends is excellent for acquainting children orally with final consonant blends and helping them develop the necessary phonemic awareness in preparation for more advanced blending work, involving four phonemes. What is included in the pack? One PDF sheet for the final _ND blend. What do the worksheets involve? Pupils are instructed to combine the two letters on the worksheet and then look for objects that end with that consonant blend. Then, these items ought to be coloured, leaving the others uncoloured. Children can easily work on the sheet unaided once they have been instructed, although, with those children with special needs, it is strongly suggested that an adult works with the child for maximum benefit. How to use The introduction of the concept of final blends needs to be done thoroughly. When I work with children, especially those with a special need, I first like to teach children to blend two consonant letters. Then I work on developing the children's phonemic awareness: that being the ability to hear two consonant letters blended at the end of a word, easily. Some children find final blends easier than initial blends as they can sound out the first three sounds, and simply add a fourth: h-a-n: han-d. I call /n/ 'naughty' 'n' as he likes to hide in words: children are apt to miss out the nasal sound and spell hand as 'had'. I then ask them to sound back what they have written and we laugh. Often they can quickly insert the missing letter, having had plenty of practice aurally, such as this sheet affords. However all pupils need practice, some more than others. These worksheets can assist by first encouraging students to blend the two consonant letters and then by helping them to hear the blend at the end of a word. As often as you can, practice blending the letters in each final blend and encourage the students to follow suit. I find that modelling is key at this stage. Who are the final blends Find and colour worksheets for? Young learners Those with a special need Due to their non-babyish nature, they can be successfully used with older ESL/EFL pupils. Answer keys: The answer key is included on the sheet, in small print.
