This political systems lesson is an engaging way to teach your students in 6th, 7th, 8th or 9th grade about the different political systems that are found around the world- throughout history and in our modern times. Students will work independently or as small groups to research five different kinds of political leadership: dictatorship, monarchy, oligarchy, theocracy, and democracy. They will complete independent research to discover information about the following topics: Rise to Power: How does this leader get selected- elections, by birth, another way? Actions: What are this leader's jobs when in power? Making laws? Known Associates: Who does this leader work with when they are in power? Ancient Examples: Provide examples of civilizations in history who had this type of leader. Current Examples: Provide examples of countries that currently have this type of leader. Pros: What are the positive aspects of this type of leader? Cons: What are the negative aspects of this type of leader? Students will present their information in a very unique way: on a handmade Wanted Poster: which can add a bit of fun to the lesson. Important Note: Please keep in mind that these posters are created to be printed on 11x17 sheets of paper- perfect to display and hang around your classroom! Groups can present their research to the rest of the class, and students can use the included note-taking sheets to record the facts about the other political systems. They try to get the lowest score, which encourages thinking strategically about language structure. Untangle offers phrases that are jumbled together and need to be separated. Step Down has crossword puzzle clues. This first one has a a 5-letter word answer, then students drop a letter for the next clue. The final clue in each set has a 3-letter word answer. Match Up has students pair together two sets of three letters to make six-letter words for a common theme. Finally, Bull's Eye lets students use visual skills to rotate rings with letters to create 4 5-letter words for each bull's eye. 5th Grade Math Lesson Powers of 10 Multiply and Divide by Powers of 10

This simple math lesson will help your middle grades students understand how to multiply & divide by powers of ten. It is a great way to address 5th grade math common standards in Numbers in Base Ten: A.1 and A.2. How to Use: Kinaesthetic Lesson Idea: When I introduce this lesson, I take some pieces of construction paper and write a single digit, a decimal place, or a zero on each one. I have some students come up to the front of the room to hold the cards. Then they physically move around to slide the the decimal place card to another spot, or to add or remove zero cards. This lets the rest of the class easily see and visualize this math in action. For example, if I had four students holding cards with a 5, a 2, a 0, and a decimal, and I asked them to divide by 10, they would move to show 52.0 instead of 520. After the hands-on math lesson, we go through the handout page as a class- filling in the blanks and learning the rules for multiplying & dividing by powers of ten. Finally, the students will complete the practice section of the worksheet independently. Early finishers can create their own word problems that involve multiplying or dividing by powers of 10 to share during the wrap-up of the lesson. Answer Key Included Grades to Use With: This lesson is designed to meet 5th grade learning standards, but it could also be used with grade 4 students, or in a split class, or as a review in 6th and 7th grade. This lesson is an excellent addition to a pre-algebra unit in grades 6 or 7 to help show students a real-world application of using expressions, tables of values, and graphing to solve a simple, everyday financial literacy decision. Students are tasked with deciding how to pay to visit a new wave pool in the neighbourhood. They can pay a flat monthly fee or pay a smaller fee and then pay a small amount each time they go. The trick will be determining how often they are likely to go each month. Students get to: Analyze a realistic scenario Complete two tables of values Write a pattern rule in words and turn it into an expression with a variable Create a simple line graph to compare the two options visually Explain their decision in words using evidence from their mathematical work This lesson can be used in various ways: it can be used during full-class instruction or smaller group activities. It could be regular classwork, a homework assignment, or even a summative assessment. I liked to have students complete it near the end of our algebra unit to assess skills before the unit test and to have as an artifact for parent-teacher conferences. An extension challenge is offered that is specifically designed for early finishers. A complete answer key is also included for easy marking out of twenty points. Grades to Use With: This lesson is designed for upper elementary or middle school students in grades 5-7. It could also be used in high school special education classrooms. Critical Thinking: Math in the Media: Finding Errors Witness your students transform into math detectives with this fun educational tool! Students can practice both math skills and media literacy at the same time as they read real headlines and try to decide if they make sense mathematically. This unique teaching resource uses real headlines and quotes taken directly from various media sources. It presents learners with an opportunity to scrutinize these bits of information for mathematical inaccuracies. How to Use: Teachers can project these pages on an interactive whiteboard or print them out as worksheets—providing flexibility to adapt the delivery according to classroom needs or personal preferences. This EE decodable reading book can help children develop reading fluency. With a matching PowerPoint, is ideally suited to Guided Reading. It is part of a series of highly structured decodable reading books with controlled vocab; all vocab is decodable using phonic knowledge the child already has (if read in sequence) and true irregular sight words are only slowly and gradually introduced. Science of reading aligned. Based on the most up-to-date phonic research. This book is the next in our new series for budding historians who may be older pupils and may have special needs and need a more mature storyline than cats and dogs! It follows on from our previous sets of ' Learn to Read' packs covering the 5 vowels and the previous books in the series so the pupil is expected to be able to blend 3 and 4 sounds securely and be ready to read words with /oo/. It can be used as a stand-alone decodable reading book provided a child can blend CVC/CCVC/CVCC words and has learned the sound oo. These books are best read in sequence. They can also be found here as a growing bundle pack with a scope and sequence. This book contains words with the following sounds: oo. This series has been written with the aid of one of my pupils, aged 8. He writes his ideas and draws pictures and then I formulate them into a fool-proof reading book using only decodable words. Reading Made Simple for Special Needs A 100% systematic phonic reading programme for all ages and abilities. Give your child a Head start in reading! Due to its 100% systematic nature, this reading programme is highly suitable for any child with a special need, including dyslexia (or suspected), or any other need that is causing a child to have difficulties learning to read. What makes this reading programme different? · It has its own, easy-to-download and print phonic reading books, making it accessible to many children worldwide. · Each book carefully builds on the vocabulary of those that have gone before, providing much repetition, without relying on predictable text. · Pictures aid the storyline without encouraging reading from the pictures – i.e. guessing. · The vocabulary is based on phonic families, which are introduced in a carefully planned way. · True sight words – those that cannot be sounded out - are kept to the very minimum. Most words are introduced in their phonic family wherever possible. · It is truly multisensory, using the power of the hand. We not only look at the words, but we write them too. This is powerful and has the bonus of turning the child not only into a reader but into a writer as well. Typical signs that this programme can help: · Difficulty recalling words when seen on flashcards or when reading texts, which results in no or little reading fluency · b/d letter reversal of a chronic nature – i.e. the child has not grown out of it · Difficulty ordering letters in words: E.g. top becomes pot. · Difficulty differentiating between like words: spoon/soon; back/black; sheep/sleep etc… · Difficulty tracking words across a page To help all children succeed, each phonic family is taught in two lessons, each a week in duration. This speed has been tried and tested to be the optimum speed to allow children to absorb new information without mental overload. You may find that some children need longer - but never less. Each phonic family is split into half and only 5/6 words in a family are studied each week. Activities are provided to give the child plenty of exposure to the new sound and the set of words that contain it. These activities are not hard, but simply bring the child face to face with the words, first individually, then in sentences, and finally in longer passages. We also seek to strengthen knowledge of blends and develop phonemic awareness through the activities, much needed by these learners. In all, the way that Reading Made Simple has been designed reduces the burden on the working memory, making it easier for children to learn to read. Children relax as they meet familiar words again and again. They begin to say – sometimes for the first time, ‘I can read’. With this programme, you can help a non-reader today! How long are the books? The reading books are 12 pages long. Why are these books FREE when other people's books cost so much? Are they of lesser quality? They are free as I regard the ability to read as being a fundamental right of every living person. Why should some miss out on top-quality resources because they cannot pay for them? In terms of content, they are top quality, carefully planned and sequenced to help as many children as possible get started on the phonic road to reading. Help your high-school students gain real-life financial literacy skills as they learn about income tax refunds from RRSPs in Canada or 401ks and IRAs in the US. This guided lesson includes: - Information about registered retirement accounts (RRSPs) in Canada and 401ks and IRAs in the USA in simple, easy-to-understand language - An example of how to calculate tax savings when investing in registered accounts in countries that use progressive tax rates - Four scenarios of increasing difficulty for students to work on independently or in pairs (answer key included) - Follow-up written questions to help students think more deeply about the pros and cons of registered savings accounts Grades: This lesson is appropriate for high school classes, life skills classes, and adult education. It requires students to have an understanding of percent written in decimal form. For example, finding 26% of $12,000 by multiplying 12,000 by 0.26 How to Use: Use the first page as a lesson for your students. Teach them about registered accounts in Canada and the US, why the government encourages them, and what benefits they have. This is where you can introduce the idea of tax refunds.
