Making Policy: No Vehicles in the Park!

Something you probably know that your students might not? Making rules is a lot harder than it looks! This take on a classic activity is a great ice breaker for a conversation on policy, and is a lasting and memorable activity that can be referenced back to as the year goes on. Essentially, the city wants to pass a new law prohibiting vehicles in the park. Like often in policy, this simple rule gets far more complex when nuance is introduced. Students first learn about policy and law, and are then tasked with creating policy and law of their own. After they have created a no vehicles in the park policy, their policy is put to the test as exception after exception is put forth. What counts as a vehicle? What about non-motorized vehicles? Bikes? Ambulances? The list goes on! Students have the opportunity to dive into the complex world of policy creation as their policy is picked apart by exceptions. The Core Principles of Economics - Learning about Opportunity Cost?

I use this lesson to introduce my students to one of the six core principles of economics - opportunity cost! Once students are settled in the classroom I have a question for the students to think about. Soon, after everyone had the chance to think about it, we began our discussion. Next, after quickly reviewing "scarcity," I ask volunteers to write their names on a piece of paper. I choose one of these names randomly. All students gather around as the chosen student receives two $1 bills. I announce that this money now belongs to the student. I don't want it back. It is theirs! Several choices are presented to the student and what comes next is one of our more memorable experiences in my economics classes. I am a 7th grade teacher, and I use this in my classroom but it can easily be used for grades 5-12, in my opinion. Enjoy!

The dynamics of use can vary, you can have students play in different ways with these cards. - GAME 1: One student shows the card and the other student is in charge of saying the name of the number. - GAME 2: One student says a random number from 1 to 30 and the other student looks for the corresponding card. - GAME 3: One student draws a card at random and the other student formulates a sum or addition that results in the chosen number. Thus, there are different ways in which you could apply these primers, it all depends on the creativity of the teacher or instructor. Also remember that you can use these cards at home so that your children learn the numbers from 1 to 30, as well as at school.
