This _NK Endings decodable reading book + matching PowerPoint for guided reading is the 13th book in a series that can help children with special needs pupils develop reading fluency. Each book comes with a matching PowerPoint making it suitable for use in a range of settings. The Jack Stories, of which this book is one, introduces one phonic sound at a time, and subsequent books build on the vocabulary of the books before, constantly revising and reviewing learned sounds. Irregular sight words are only slowly and gradually introduced. Science of reading aligned. Based on the most up-to-date phonic research. These books should be read sequentially as they tell one long story, each telling a part. This book contains words with the following sounds: CK: OO, EE and SH and CH, ND and NT Endings. The series of books can also be purchased as a growing bundle with a scope and sequence - one file, less clutter! This series has been written with the aid of one of my pupils, aged 8. He has drawn some of the pictures. What makes this phonic reading programme for special needs different? · It has its own, easy-to-download and print phonic reading books, making it accessible to many children worldwide. · Each book carefully builds on the vocabulary of those that have gone before, providing much repetition, without relying on predictable text. · Pictures aid the storyline without encouraging reading from the pictures – i.e. guessing. · The vocabulary is based on phonic families, which are introduced in a carefully planned way. · True sight words – those that cannot be sounded out - are kept to the very minimum. Most words are introduced in their phonic family wherever possible. · It is truly multisensory, using the power of the hand. We not only look at the words, but we write them too. This is powerful and has the bonus of turning the child not only into a reader but into a writer as well. Typical signs that this programme can help: Those with dyslexia, or suspected of having dyslexia Difficulty recalling words when seen on flashcards or when reading texts, which results in no or little reading fluency b/d letter reversal of a chronic nature – i.e. the child has not grown out of it Difficulty ordering letters in words: E.g. top becomes pot. Fog reading comprehension: This Product Includes Reading Passage Each lesson begins with a high-interest reading passage written in clear, student-friendly paragraphs. The passage is usually three to four paragraphs long and explores different parts of the topic, such as history, science, technology, people, places, or real-world connections. Most passages are between 250 and 350 words, making them long enough to build reading stamina but short enough to fit easily into a regular lesson. Before reading, ask students to look at the heading and make a quick prediction: What do they think the passage will be about? What do they already know about this topic? What words or ideas might appear in the text? First Read Options You can choose the reading format that best fits your class: Teacher read-aloud – Great for support, modeling fluency, and helping students access the text. Partner reading – Students read paragraph by paragraph with a partner. Independent reading – Best for students who are ready to work with more independence. While reading, students can underline important details and any vocabulary words they think might appear later in the questions. Mixed Questions The first question page includes four multiple-choice questions and three written response questions. The multiple-choice questions each include four answer choices. These are useful for checking basic understanding, key details, vocabulary, and reading skills. Students can complete the multiple-choice questions independently first, then quickly review the answers as a class. The written response questions require students to answer in one or two complete sentences. Encourage students to include evidence from the passage when possible. A helpful sentence frame is: “I think ___ because the text says ___.” If students get stuck, remind them to return to the passage and look for the part that helps answer the question. Creative Writing The creative writing task asks students to write a short paragraph of five to eight sentences based on a question connected to the topic. Before writing, have students jot down three key ideas they want to include. You can also ask a few students to share ideas with the class to support anyone who needs help getting started. Writing Expectations Students should aim to include: 5–8 complete sentences At least 2 facts or details from the passage At least 2 vocabulary words from the previous page After writing, students can read their paragraphs aloud while classmates listen for facts, details, and vocabulary words. Answer Key An answer key is included for the multiple-choice questions. Written response questions include sample answers to show what a strong response might look like. Vocabulary answers are also provided. If the lesson includes a summary question, a sample summary is included as well.

Thinking Like a Historian: Observing and Sourcing a Personal Document or Artifact is a highly engaging and interactive mini-unit of 4 or 5 days for 6th, 7th, 8th, and 9th graders. It is designed to have your students work collaboratively as historians to look at primary source documents and artifacts as evidence from their lives. In the process, they will learn the kinds of questions to ask about historical artifacts and documents to help them interpret their meaning and importance. The purpose of this lesson is to help them understand how historians interpret evidence, especially from primary source documents as well as artifacts. The lesson introduces or reviews key concepts and terms: primary source and secondary source documents, artifacts, evidence, and interpretation. It also provides teachers with an opportunity to introduce or review what it means to work collaboratively in small groups to make meaning of documents or artifacts. Finally, students will reflect on their experience and what they learned. The mini-unit includes objectives and learning targets aligned with Common Core Standards of Literacy in History, a detailed lesson plan, student worksheets for analyzing personal documents/ and artifacts, a sample chart for group work collaboration, and a student reflection worksheet for them to reflect on their experience as a historian. In addition, I include a parent/guardian letter in English and Spanish explaining the unit. Objectives Students will define key historical concepts and terms: primary source, secondary source, artifacts, evidence, and interpretation. Students will give examples of what primary source and secondary source documents are. Students will give examples of artifacts. Students will examine personal primary source documents and artifacts and will ask questions about the documents to help them understand the historical significance of it or its meaning. Students will do a close read or close examination for evidence about the document or artifact and interpret what it means and what it reveals about their family, culture, the person or people involved, etc. Students will “source” a document or artifact to evaluate its credibility and point of view by asking questions about who wrote or created it, when, why, and for what purpose or audience. Students will explain how to work collaboratively with their classmates. Students will identify the key historical descriptors (tools and skills) they most connected with and why. Students will reflect on their experience of thinking like a historian. Standards CCSS.ELA-LITERACY.RH.6-8.1: Cite specific textual evidence to support analysis of primary and secondary sources. CCSS.ELA-LITERACY.RH.6-8.2: Determine the central ideas or information of a primary or secondary source; provide an accurate summary of the source distinct from prior knowledge or opinions. CCSS.ELA-LITERACY.RH.6-8.4: Determine the meaning of words and phrases as they are used in a text, including vocabulary specific to domains related to history/social studies.

This information can be used by the teacher to assess prior knowledge and help plan the direction of the unit of work. Once the teaching of the unit is complete, ask students to repeat the process. This will show how their thinking has change of the unit and how their knowledge has grown. Choosing two different coloured pens will easily show prior and post knowledge. They give them an opportunity to deep dive into the content that is being taught.
