This crossword puzzle is for students that are learning spelling, or already master spelling but want something colorful before holidays or students who are studying English as their second language. In this crossword, there are images as hints and the students have to name the images to the horizontal rows of the crossword. The lines are connected so when the crossword is filled correctly, a hidden message will appear in the emphasized vertical row. The hidden message will be: Holiday in Spring. The benefit of this kind of crossword is that once students understand the simple concept, they should be able to proceed themselves regardless of their level. The answer crossword is on the second page, but students are able to tell themselves whether they are right or not. If the hidden sentence is meaningful they are most likely to have done it right. If it doesn’t make sense, they will realize that and for example co-operate with their classmates to find the right solution. In other words, this worksheet is self-checking. This is a print-and-go and ready-to-use resource which can also be added to centers , or provided for substitute teachers. There are 15 words in this crossword. Some of them are very basic, such as ball, duck or tree. Some others may be a bit more difficult, like tricycle, squirrel or picnic. Sentence Types word search, scramble and crossword puzzle I made this sentence types puzzle set for my 3rd and 4th graders during our writing unit. The kids could write sentences but had no idea what a declarative sentence was or how to tell the difference between a question and a command. So I put together a word search, a word scramble, and a crossword using words like declarative, interrogative, imperative, exclamatory, statement, question, command, exclamation, period, question mark, exclamation point, tell, ask, order, and express. Nothing fancy — just puzzles to help the four sentence types finally stick. The PDF is four pages. Three puzzles plus one answer key page. The word search works well for quiet time after recess. The scramble gets them talking because they argue about whether "Please sit down" is a command or a request. The crossword I use for partners. I added a couple simple period, question mark, and exclamation point drawings but nothing too busy. Works for 3rd through 5th grade. Print and go. ELL English Phonics for Spanish Speakers word search, scramble and crossword puzzle I made this phonics puzzle set specifically for my Spanish-speaking newcomers during our first reading unit. The kids were learning letter sounds, but they kept getting confused by the vowels because English short vowels sound so different from Spanish. So I put together a word search, a word scramble, and a crossword using basic three-to-four letter words that have clear phonetic patterns and are useful for building vocabulary. I included words like cat, dog, sun, hat, pig, red, box, fish, and milk, all with picture clues to help connect the sound to the meaning. Nothing fancy — just puzzles to help the early phonics skills finally stick for kids who are building a foundation in both language and literacy. The PDF is four pages. The word search works well for independent practice after a direct phonics lesson because the visual scanning reinforces letter recognition without requiring a lot of oral language.
