Sentence Types word search, scramble and crossword puzzle

I made this sentence types puzzle set for my 3rd and 4th graders during our writing unit. The kids could write sentences but had no idea what a declarative sentence was or how to tell the difference between a question and a command. So I put together a word search, a word scramble, and a crossword using words like declarative, interrogative, imperative, exclamatory, statement, question, command, exclamation, period, question mark, exclamation point, tell, ask, order, and express. Nothing fancy — just puzzles to help the four sentence types finally stick.

The PDF is four pages. Three puzzles plus one answer key page. The word search works well for quiet time after recess. The scramble gets them talking because they argue about whether "Please sit down" is a command or a request. The crossword I use for partners. I added a couple simple period, question mark, and exclamation point drawings but nothing too busy.

Works for 3rd through 5th grade. Print and go. Sometimes I have early finishers write one example of each sentence type on the back. The kids actually ask for these now.
