Classical Music Vocabulary word search, scramble and crossword puzzle
I made this classical music vocabulary puzzle set for my 3rd and 4th graders during our music unit. The kids could name pop songs but had no idea what words like symphony, concerto, or sonata meant when we listened to classical pieces in class. So I put together a word search, a word scramble, and a crossword using words like symphony, concerto, sonata, overture, opera, aria, movement, orchestra, conductor, composer, string section, brass section, woodwind section, percussion, and tempo. Nothing fancy — just puzzles to help the classical music vocabulary finally stick.
The PDF is four pages. Three puzzles plus one answer key page. The word search works well for quiet time after recess or during indoor recess. The scramble gets them talking because they argue about whether a sonata has singers in it or not. The crossword I use for partners or as a review after a listening lesson. I added a couple simple treble clef, note, and piano drawings but nothing too busy.
Works for 3rd through 5th grade. Print and go. Sometimes I have early finishers write one fact about a symphony on the back. The kids actually ask for these now.
