Idioms word search, scramble and crossword puzzle

Idioms word search, scramble and crossword puzzle
Holiday & Seasonal, ELA, Reading, Language Development, Vocabulary, Kindergarten, Grade 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, Word Searches, Worksheets, Worksheets & Printables, Crosswords Puzzles

Idioms word search, scramble and crossword puzzle I made this idioms puzzle set for my 3rd and 4th graders during our figurative language unit. The kids would read phrases like "it's raining cats and dogs" and think it meant actual animals falling from the sky. So I put together a word search, a word scramble, and a crossword using common idioms like raining cats and dogs, piece of cake, break a leg, hit the sack, spill the beans, cost an arm and a leg, under the weather, let the cat out of the bag, bite the bullet, and kill two birds with one stone. Nothing fancy — just puzzles to help the real meanings finally stick. The PDF is four pages. Three puzzles plus one answer key page. The word search works well for quiet time after recess. The scramble gets them talking because they argue about whether "break a leg" really means good luck. The crossword I use for partners with meaning clues. I added a couple simple cat, dog, and cake drawings but nothing too busy. Works for 3rd through 5th grade. Print and go. Sometimes I have early finishers use an idiom in a sentence on the back. The kids actually ask for these now.

ELL Academic Vocabulary Grade 5 word search, scramble and crossword puzzle I made this academic vocabulary puzzle set for my 5th graders during our reading and writing block. The kids could do the work but had no idea what words like "analyze," "summarize," or "infer" meant when I gave them directions. So I put together a word search, a word scramble, and a crossword using words like analyze, summarize, infer, evaluate, explain, describe, compare, contrast, identify, locate, define, state, retell, and support. I also included a few key content-area terms like main idea, detail, sequence, cause, effect, and fact/opinion because they show up in every subject. Nothing fancy — just puzzles to help the direction words finally stick. The PDF is four pages. Three puzzles plus one answer key page. The word search works well for quiet time after recess. The scramble gets them talking because they argue about the difference between "summarize" and "retell." The crossword I use for partners or as a warm-up before a lesson. I added a couple simple checkmark, pencil, and book drawings but nothing too busy. Works for 4th through 5th grade, especially for English learners who need extra exposure to academic language. Print and go. Sometimes I have early finishers pick one word and use it in a sentence on the back. The kids actually ask for these now.

Native American Culture Vocabulary word search, scramble and crossword puzzle I made this Native American culture vocabulary puzzle set for my 3rd and 4th graders during our social studies unit. The kids could name some tribes but had no idea what words like shaman, totem, or powwow meant. So I put together a word search, a word scramble, and a crossword using words like tribe, chief, shaman, totem, powwow, dreamcatcher, moccasin, canoe, bow, spear, pottery, beadwork, story, tradition, and respect for nature. Nothing fancy — just puzzles to help the cultural vocabulary finally make sense. The PDF is four pages. Three puzzles plus one answer key page. The word search works well for quiet time after recess. The scramble gets them talking because they argue about what a totem pole is used for. The crossword I use for partners. I added a couple simple totem pole and dreamcatcher drawings but nothing too busy. Works for 3rd through 5th grade. Print and go. Sometimes I have early finishers write one sentence about a Native American tradition on the back. The kids actually ask for these now.

Chemical Reactions word search, scramble and crossword puzzle I made this chemical reactions puzzle set for my 4th graders during our physical science unit. The kids could see baking soda and vinegar fizz but had no idea what was actually happening or how to tell a chemical change from a physical one. So I put together a word search, a word scramble, and a crossword using words like chemical reaction, reactant, product, physical change, chemical change, fizz, bubble, color change, temperature, heat, light, gas, precipitate, burn, rust, and evidence. Nothing fancy — just puzzles to help the vocabulary stick. The PDF is four pages. Three puzzles plus one answer key page. The word search works well for quiet time after recess. The scramble gets them talking because they argue about whether a candle burning is a chemical or physical change. The crossword I use for partners. I added a couple simple bubbling flask drawings but nothing too busy. Works for 4th through 5th grade. Print and go. Sometimes I have early finishers list three signs that a chemical reaction has happened on the back. The kids actually ask for these now.
