Use Greek and Latin roots to work out unfamiliar words, defining audible, visible, manuscript, thermometer, chronological and geography from their parts
Combine prefixes with roots to build and define words such as interrupt, construct, inspect, export, transform and distract
Answer literature and informational questions from two supplied passages, citing evidence for theme, point of view, main idea, cause and effect and inference

Teaching tips

The packet is numbered as one sequence but split into five self-contained sections, so a class that only needs grammar review can run activities 33 to 42 without touching the rest
Print the two reading passages separately from their question pages - twelve of the fifty-two activities depend on "The Mystery of the Old Trunk" and "How Volcanoes Work", and students will keep turning back to them
The games packet asks for cardstock, notes that solid lines are cuts and dotted lines are folds, and suggests laminating if the set is to be reused year after year; Build-a-Sentence Spinners also needs a pencil and a paperclip as the spinner arrow

Questions teachers ask about this resource

Are the reading passages supplied, or does the class need its own texts?

Both passages are printed in the packet. "The Mystery of the Old Trunk" is a narrative about Marcus finding his great-great-grandmother Eleanor's trunk from 1898, and "How Volcanoes Work" is an informational piece on shield, strato and cinder cone volcanoes. Twelve of the fifty-two activities work from those two texts.

What has to be prepared before the games can be played?

Printing and cutting, mostly. The games packet advises cardstock, says solid lines are cuts and dotted lines are folds, and notes laminating is optional. Beyond that: 25 markers per student for bingo, and a pencil plus a paperclip to turn each Build-a-Sentence wheel into a spinner.

How is the review organised across the year's skills?

Five numbered sections in a single run of 52 activities: word study and morphology (1-10), vocabulary and figurative language (11-20), reading comprehension (21-32), grammar and language (33-42), and writing and conventions (43-52). The reading section is the largest at twelve activities.
