โญ The 6 Capstone Projects
The Innovation Pitch โ students develop and defend a design within a fixed budget.
The Food Preservation System โ students apply their learning about particles, properties, purification, and chemical change.
The Energy Grid โ students combine learning about energy chains, solar, wind, storage, and whole systems.
The Mars Habitat โ students tackle an interdisciplinary design challenge using models of Earth's systems, gravity, water, distance, and seismic design.
The Sustainability Audit โ students investigate matter cycling, ecosystems, resource protection, and environmental problems.
STEM Innovators Showcase โ the ultimate Grade 5 capstone, where students independently complete the engineering process and communicate a solution to an authentic audience.
๐ฌ The 12 Mini-Projects
The Trade-off Curve
The Weighting Experiment
The Replication Test
The Saturation Ratio
The Separation Challenge
The Efficiency Chain
The Demand Profile
The Water Model
The Volume Problem
The Decomposition Rate
The Adoption Study
The Pseudocode Relay
๐ซ How It Works in the Classroom
Use these Grade 5 STEM projects as unit-ending capstones, standalone investigations, enrichment activities, or flexible projects during spare weeks.
โญ Capstone Projects
Each capstone runs for five sessions across one or two weeks with teams of 3โ4.
Students don't simply build a model and call it finished. They work through a structured engineering process that includes planning, research, testing, data collection, iteration, optimization, and communication.
Capstones deliberately reuse builds and data from the corresponding unit, helping students see how individual investigations connect into a larger body of learning. They also culminate in an audience or panel that asks students to defend their evidence and decisions.
๐ฌ Mini-Projects
Each mini-project takes three sessions and is designed to stand alone.
They're perfect for:
Filling a short or spare week
Replacing a regular challenge
Providing STEM enrichment
Building toward a school STEM event
Giving students additional practice with data and evidence
Students collect purposeful data rather than simply completing a craft or construction activity.
๐ฏ Standards & Learning Goals
These projects help Grade 5 students develop increasingly independent STEM and engineering skills, including:
๐ Defining authentic problems
๐ Identifying criteria and constraints
๐ก Generating and evaluating possible solutions
โ๏ธ Designing and testing prototypes
๐ Iterating and optimizing designs
๐ Collecting, organizing, and analyzing data
๐งฎ Working with measurements, ratios, percentages, costs, and calculations
๐ Creating and interpreting graphs
โ๏ธ Evaluating trade-offs
๐งช Designing controlled investigations
๐ง Evaluating evidence and source reliability
๐ฌ Using evidence to support conclusions
๐ฅ Collaborating and communicating effectively
๐ค Presenting and defending engineering decisions
The projects intentionally make data part of the engineering process. For example, students may compare original and replicated results, calculate recovery rates, measure energy efficiency, model demand, or calculate decomposition rates.
โญ Why Teachers Love It
Save planning time.
You get ready-to-use project structures with teacher directions, student pages, criteria, constraints, data plans, and assessment support.
Make STEM more rigorous.
Students aren't just making something. They're expected to collect evidence, analyze results, and use numbers to defend their decisions.
Build real-world problem-solving skills.
Budgets, stakeholders, trade-offs, reliability, adoption, efficiency, sustainability, and optimization give students authentic reasons to think critically.
Create a clear progression.
The six capstones intentionally connect to the Grade 5 curriculum and revisit previous learning rather than functioning as disconnected activities.
Give students authentic audiences.
Several projects culminate in panels, presentations, buddy classes, families, or showcase visitors. The final Innovators Showcase asks students to present a solution that another person could actually act on.
Easy to use flexibly.
Run the six capstones as your core projects, add the mini-projects when you have extra time, or select individual investigations to target specific skills.
