Abraham Lincoln word search, scramble and crossword puzzle
I made this Abraham Lincoln puzzle set for my 3rd and 4th graders during our Civil War unit. The kids knew he was on the penny and the five dollar bill but had no idea why he was famous or what the Emancipation Proclamation was. So I put together a word search, a word scramble, and a crossword using words like Lincoln, president, Civil War, Union, slavery, emancipation, proclamation, freedom, Gettysburg, speech, debate, lawyer, Illinois, penny, and memorial. Nothing fancy — just puzzles to help the facts finally stick.
The PDF is four pages. Three puzzles plus one answer key page. The word search works well for quiet time after recess. The scramble gets them talking because they argue about whether Lincoln was the 16th or 26th president. The crossword I use for partners. I added a couple simple top hat and log cabin drawings but nothing too busy.
Works for 3rd through 5th grade. Print and go. Sometimes I have early finishers write one fact about the Gettysburg Address on the back. The kids actually ask for these now.
