About this resource
What's inside this resource
Charades is a great game to help children improve social skills such as noticing other’s body language, noticing other’s facial expressions, self-regulation, good sportsmanship, and teamwork, just to name a few!
Some children need a lot of practice to learn or improve these skills. This Back-To-School charades game is a ton of fun to play around the beginning of the school year and will have your children working on these skills without even realizing it!
Play Back-To-School charades as you normally would play charades. One student picks a card {I like to put them in an empty shoebox}, acts out the item on the card, other students try to guess what it is.

Teaching tips & learning objectives
Learning objectives
Act out an assigned word or concept nonverbally using body language and gesture.
Read a peer's body language and facial expressions to guess the word being acted out.
Practice turn-taking, patience, and good sportsmanship in a small-group guessing game.
Teaching tips
Print the cards on cardstock and laminate them, as the instructions page suggests, so the set can be reused across school years.
Because the game has no reading or writing component, it works well as a transition activity or social-skills center at the start of the school year.
Consider having students act out cards without any props first, then allow simple gestures toward classroom objects if a group is struggling, since the card set is entirely school-themed and classroom objects are visible for reference.
Skills covered
Nonverbal communication — students convey a word through gesture and body language alone.
Social awareness — the game explicitly targets noticing others' body language and facial expressions.
Self-regulation and sportsmanship — students wait their turn and manage the group dynamic of guessing and being guessed.
Vocabulary — 23 unique back-to-school nouns (school bus appears on two cards) reinforce basic classroom-object naming.
