About this resource

What's inside this resource

Set up a class birthday wall with a cupcake card for every month of the year. Each of the 12 wide cards shows a cupcake in its own liner and frosting colors, topped with a seasonal picture such as a snowflake for January, an umbrella for April, a watermelon slice for July or an acorn for November, beside the month number and name in large type. Cards print three to a page with dashed cut lines.

Students' names go on 27 candle cut-outs, each with a flame, a name strip and a circle for the birthday date. Two ribbon strips spell out "Our Birthday Club" to title the board. A set-up page lists what is in the set and gives three steps to print, label and pin the pieces, along with tips for busy months and for laminating the cards so only the candles change each year.

The final page, Our Birthday List, is a write-in teacher record with a box for each month, an overflow box for extra names and a line to choose one group celebration day for students whose birthdays fall while school is out.

Teaching tips & learning objectives

Learning objectives

  • Name the 12 months of the year in calendar order.

  • Find the month of their own birthday on a class display.

  • Write their name and birthday date on a candle.

Teaching tips

  • Laminate the cupcake cards and title strip once, as the set-up page suggests, so only the candles need replacing each year.

  • When one month has many birthdays, pin its extra candles in a second row.

  • Use the black and white version as a coloring page, since the cupcakes and candles print as clean outlines.

Skills covered

  • Months of the year: each cupcake card pairs a month name with its number, from MONTH 1 for January to MONTH 12 for December.

  • Seasonal connections: toppers such as a snowflake, a kite, a beach ball and a fall leaf link each month to the season.

  • Name and date writing: students fill in their own candle's name strip and date circle.

Good to know

Questions teachers ask about this resource

How many candles are included?

Twenty-seven, nine to a page, all one size. Each has a name strip and a circle for the birthday date.

What if many birthdays fall in the same month?

Extra candles can be pinned in a second row beside the month's cupcake, and the Our Birthday List page has an overflow box for additional names.

Can students color the cupcakes?

Yes. The black and white version prints the cupcakes, candles and title strips as outlines with no fill, ready to color.

Is there a banner for the board?

Yes. Two ribbon strips spell out Our Birthday Club and tape together end to end across the top of the display.
