Cold Case Detective Files Reading Comprehension | Grades 6-8

Cold Case Detective Files is a 60-page reading comprehension and critical-thinking resource designed for students in Grades 6–8. Students take on the role of junior case analysts as they investigate eight unique mystery cases using witness statements, timelines, CCTV reports, digital metadata, access records, and physical clues.

Students must read carefully, compare sources, identify contradictions, evaluate evidence, test alibis, distinguish facts from inferences, and draw evidence-based conclusions. Rather than relying only on recall questions, the activities encourage students to explain how and why specific evidence supports a conclusion.

Skills practiced include reading comprehension, inference, text evidence, point of view, source reliability, sequencing, drawing conclusions, evidence ranking, counterarguments, and Claim-Evidence-Reasoning (CER).

The resource includes eight mystery cases: The Missing Championship Trophy, Mystery at Platform 6, The Locked Art Room, The Anonymous Note, The Museum Alarm, The Impossible Alibi, The Vanishing Backpack, and Case of the Changed Photograph.

Students also complete Detective Challenge Labs focused on evidence ranking, counterarguments, source bias, and CER reasoning.

Included: 60 total pages, student activities on Pages 3–54, eight unique mystery cases, challenge activities, evidence-based written responses, and a complete page-by-page teacher answer key on Pages 55–60.

This resource is suitable for middle school ELA, reading comprehension practice, independent work, small groups, enrichment, critical-thinking lessons, and mystery-themed classroom activities.
