Unexplained Science Files | Reading & Critical Thinking | Grades 6-8

About This Product
Unexplained Science Files is a 60-page science and critical reading resource designed for students in Grades 6–8. Students investigate unusual scientific reports while learning to separate observations and facts from claims, interpretations, and speculation.
Throughout the resource, students examine scientific mysteries using reading passages, eyewitness accounts, data tables, maps, field reports, scientific explanations, media posts, and other evidence. Rather than jumping to conclusions, students evaluate the strength of evidence, compare possible explanations, identify missing information, and develop cautious evidence-based conclusions.
Students investigate topics involving unusual lights, underwater sounds, moving rocks, radio signals, bioluminescence, changing water levels, unexplained sounds, and visual perception. Additional activities challenge students to fact-check claims, identify overclaims, rank evidence, evaluate source reliability, and complete a final investigation.
Skills practiced include: reading comprehension, informational text analysis, fact vs. claim vs. speculation, observation vs. interpretation, source reliability, evidence evaluation, data interpretation, cause and effect, compare and contrast, media literacy, identifying overclaims, alternative explanations, Claim-Evidence-Reasoning (CER), and critical thinking.
Included: 60 total pages, 8 main science investigation cases, review and synthesis activities, a final investigation, student reflection/certificate, and a complete answer key on Pages 55–60.
This resource is suitable for middle school science, ELA and science integration, independent practice, small-group work, enrichment, critical-thinking lessons, science literacy, and evidence-based reasoning practice.
