Consonant Blends word search, scramble and crossword puzzle

I made this consonant blends puzzle set for my 1st and 2nd graders during our phonics unit. The kids could sound out single consonants but got stuck when two consonants appeared together like "bl" in "black" or "st" in "stop." So I put together a word search, a word scramble, and a crossword using words like black, blue, blend, blow, clap, club, clean, glass, glide, glue, plane, play, plus, sled, sleep, slow, snake, snap, snow, stop, star, step, swim, sweet, twin, twist, and twelve. Nothing fancy — just puzzles to help the L-blends, R-blends, and S-blends finally stick.

The PDF is four pages. Three puzzles plus one answer key page. The word search works well for quiet time after recess. The scramble gets them talking because they argue about whether "twelve" starts with a tw blend. The crossword I use for partners with picture clues. I added a couple simple star, hand, and snake drawings but nothing too busy.

Works for 1st through 3rd grade. Print and go. Sometimes I have early finishers list three L-blend words and three S-blend words on the back. The kids actually ask for these now.
