Money Math Talks: Fractions, Decimals, and Percents

Help students make meaningful connections between money and rational numbers through engaging Math Talks! These activities use familiar coin and dollar amounts to build understanding of fractions, decimals, and percents while encouraging mathematical reasoning and rich classroom discussions. Students will explore equivalent values, compare amounts, justify their thinking, and develop a deeper understanding of how fractions, decimals, and percents represent the same quantities in different ways.

Rather than focusing on finding the correct answer as quickly as possible, Math Talks encourage students to think critically, explain their reasoning, listen to the ideas of others, and consider multiple solution strategies. Because money is a context that students encounter in everyday life, it provides a concrete model for understanding abstract mathematical concepts.

Activity Leaders:

These Math Talks can be used in a variety of instructional settings, including whole-group lessons, small-group instruction, math centers, intervention groups, or partner discussions.

Whole Group Option:
Project one Math Talk prompt for the class. Give students a few moments of quiet think time before inviting them to share their ideas. Encourage students to explain how they determined the value, found equivalent amounts, or compared the numbers. Record multiple strategies so students can see that there is often more than one way to solve a problem.

As students share, encourage classmates to build upon one another's thinking by asking questions such as:

• How do you know?

• Can you prove your answer in another way?

• Does anyone have a different strategy?

• Who solved it using a different representation?

Small Group Option:
Provide each group with a Math Talk card. Students can discuss the prompt together before sharing their thinking with the group. Encourage students to use math vocabulary, explain their reasoning, and respectfully compare different strategies. Teachers can circulate to ask guiding questions and support mathematical discourse.

Students will have opportunities to:

• Connect money amounts to fractions, decimals, and percents.

• Identify equivalent values using multiple representations.

• Compare the value of fractions, decimals, and percents.

• Place rational numbers accurately on a number line.

• Order values from least to greatest or greatest to least.

• Explain why two amounts are equivalent.

• Justify mathematical thinking using words, models, and number lines.

• Strengthen estimation and number sense through discussion.

Extension Ideas:

• Have students represent each value in all three forms (fraction, decimal, and percent).

• Use a number line to compare multiple money amounts and discuss the distance between values.

• Challenge students to create additional equivalent representations for a given amount.

• Encourage students to write or draw models to support their thinking.

• Invite students to create their own Money Math Talk cards to share with classmates.
