This is a Dolch Sight Words, Phrases & Sentences Packet that can be utilized by teachers and students. This is a 12-page printable that is organized with lists.

For the Dolch Sight Words, there are 11 lists with 20 words per list, for a total of 220 words.

For the Dolch Phrases, there are 11 lists with anywhere from 10 – 16 words per list, for a total of 143 phrases.

For the Dolch Sentences, there are 11 lists with 20 sentences per list, for a total of 220 sentences.

The Benefits of the Dolch Sight Words, Phrases, and Sentences Packet

Dolch Sight Words are a list of words that were specifically compiled because they do not follow traditional phonics rules for the English language. Sight words are not words that students can simply “sound out.” These words are best learned and implemented by memory. The more students practice, the better they get!

These lists can be utilized however you see fit!

Read and recognize all 220 Dolch sight words across the 11 word lists.
Read short phrases built entirely from the Dolch sight-word vocabulary.
Read complete sentences composed entirely of Dolch sight words.

Teaching tips

Work through the 11 lists in order, since list 1 introduces the highest-frequency words (the, to, and) that reappear throughout the later phrase and sentence lists.
Use the word lists for flashcard-style drilling and the matching phrase/sentence lists for connected-text fluency practice once single words are secure.
Review a word list, its matching phrase list, and its matching sentence list together, since all three reuse the same list-specific vocabulary.

Skills covered

Sight word recognition — students read the Dolch 220 word list across 11 progressively grouped lists.
Phrase-level reading — students read short phrases built from the same sight-word lists (e.g., "look at him," "a big ride").
Sentence-level reading — students read full sentences composed entirely of Dolch words (e.g., "She said that it was you.").

The same words -- each of the 11 phrase and sentence lists is built entirely from the sight words introduced in the matching numbered word list, so list 4's phrases and sentences reuse words like "big," "went" and "blue" from list 4's word list.
