English Sounds for Spanish Speakers | WIDA Levels 1-3, CEFR A1-A2

About This Product
Your Spanish speaking students are not careless speakers. They are using the Spanish sound system, which works perfectly in Spanish, on English words. This five day pack teaches the English sounds that Spanish does not make: the vowel contrasts like ship and sheep, the consonants like v and th, the final sounds and clusters of words like school and desk, and the stress and quiet vowel that carry meaning in English sentences.
Give your students five focused days on the 72 sound contrasts that decide whether English listeners hear the word your students meant to say. Every contrast starts from the Spanish sound your students already own, names exactly what the mouth does differently in English, and gives students the audio, the practice, and the games to make the new sound stick.
Grades 6-12, plus Adult Education and Higher Education.
AFTER FIVE DAYS, STUDENTS CAN
- Hear both sides of the taught contrasts and name which word they heard in a listening check
- Say pair words like ship and sheep, three and tree, can and can't with a difference a listener can hear
- Read school sentences built from the taught sounds clearly enough that a partner can write down the key words
- Explain, for the contrasts they practice, what their mouth does differently in English than in Spanish
- Catch the classic traps: the e first habit in school and speak, the two th sounds, the missing final sounds in bat and bad, and the careful starred words
- Ask for help with the three help frames: Please repeat. I do not understand. Where is the library?

FIVE DAY PACING
Day 1: Vowel Pairs. The twelve vowel contrasts, starting with ship and sheep.
Day 2: Schwa, Stress, and Sentence Music. The quiet vowel, word stress, and the tune of questions.
Day 3: Consonant Contrasts. V and b, the two th sounds, h, sh and ch, and the sounds Spanish makes differently.
Day 4: Word Edges and First Spelling Patterns. Final sounds, clusters, the three sounds of ed and plural s, and the first spelling patterns.
Day 5: Spelling Patterns, Sounds in Sentences, and the Final Performance. The last patterns, sentence practice, and a final performance your students can be proud of.
Each day has a 50 minute core path that fits one class period, with 70 to 75 minutes of material built in, so fast finishers always have real work and the period never runs short. The guide also describes an optional Day 6 review station set for classes that want a buffer day.
BILINGUAL SUPPORT
Every contrast prints with its Spanish sound anchor, so students start from the sound system they already own. Spanish meaning notes appear only where a word cannot be pictured or has more than one meaning, so the pages stay focused on sound. Student directions are written in short English with Spanish support lines, and the teacher guide is written in English, so any teacher can run these five days, whether or not they speak Spanish.
WIDA and CEFR alignment: Built for Spanish speaking learners at WIDA Levels 1 to 3 (Entering, Emerging, and early Developing) across listening and speaking for school English. The pack supports CEFR A1 to A2 phonological control: students learn to hear and say the English sound contrasts that Spanish does not make, including the vowel contrasts, final consonants, clusters, word stress, and the schwa. Spanish sound anchors and a Spanish family letter help students connect every English sound to the Spanish sound system they already own. The goal is clear, understandable English, and the pack makes no accent elimination claim.
ACTFL cross-reference: Novice Mid to Intermediate Low listening and speaking.
PRINTING AND AUDIO
Print the student packet and the games file for each student. The print map in the teacher guide shows exactly which pages to copy for each day, and the pages print cleanly in color or grayscale. Print the sound wall cards and posters from the editable tools file, or project them. Play the audio from the play buttons inside the deck during the lesson, or play the MP3 files from the Audio folder with any classroom player. The teacher guide audio index lists every file with its deck slide number.
