Newcomer English Starter Pack for Spanish Speakers | WIDA 1-2, CEFR A1

A Spanish speaking newcomer joins your class on Monday morning with little or no English. By Friday, you want that student greeting classmates, finding classrooms, reading a schedule, and asking for help in English. This pack gives you the first five days, planned and ready to teach.

Give Spanish speaking newcomers the English they need for the first days of school. This five day starter pack teaches greetings, classroom language, school people and places, schedules, numbers, dates, and the sentence frames students need to ask for help.

Grades 6-12, plus Adult Education and Higher Education.

AFTER FIVE DAYS, STUDENTS CAN

- Introduce themselves and say where they are from

- Greet teachers and classmates, and say please, thank you, and excuse me

- Follow everyday classroom directions like listen, look, read, write, and open your book

- Name school people and places and find them on a school map

- Read a class schedule, tell time, and use days, dates, and numbers

- Ask for help with sentence frames like "I need help," "Please repeat," and "Where is the library?"

- Complete a supported partner role play using the language from all five days

WHAT IS INSIDE

- 88 slide teaching deck (PowerPoint) with a play button on every target word, set, and sentence frame

- 72 pronunciation audio files (MP3), one for every target entry, also included as a separate Audio folder

- 30 page student packet with picture dictionaries, guided practice, a school map task, a schedule builder, exit tickets, and a final role play

FIVE DAY PACING

Day 1: Survival English. Greetings, introductions, feelings, and asking for help.

Day 2: Classroom Language. Classroom directions, book routines, and partner work.

Day 3: People and Places. School staff, school rooms, a school map, and location questions.

Day 4: Schedules, Numbers, and Dates. Class schedules, telling time, numbers, days, and calendar dates.

Day 5: Asking for Help and Review. Help frames, mixed review, and the final role play.

Each day has a 50 minute core path that fits one class period, with 70 to 75 minutes of material built in, so fast finishers always have real work and the period never runs short. The guide also describes an optional Day 6 review set for classes that want a buffer day.

BILINGUAL SUPPORT

Student directions are written in short English with Spanish support. Key school words are glossed when a picture or cognate is not enough, so true beginners can start working on day one while the English stays front and center. Spanish support appears only where a beginner cannot get the meaning from the picture or the word itself, so students build real English from the first page. The teacher guide is written in English, so any teacher can run these five days, whether or not they speak Spanish.

WIDA and CEFR alignment: Built for WIDA Entering and Emerging learners, Levels 1 to 2, across listening, speaking, reading, and writing. The pack supports CEFR A1 communication with greetings, personal information, classroom language, school locations, schedules, numbers, dates, and help requests. Spanish directions and a Spanish family welcome letter help true beginners start on day one.

PRINTING AND AUDIO

Print the student packet and the games file for each student. The print map in the teacher guide shows exactly which pages to copy for each day, and the pages print cleanly in color or grayscale. Play the audio from the play buttons inside the deck during the lesson, or play the MP3 files from the Audio folder with any classroom player. The teacher guide audio index lists every file with its deck slide number.
