Spanish-English Cognates for Academic Success | WIDA 1-3, CEFR A1-A2

About This Product
Your Spanish speaking students already know hundreds of English academic words: they just do not know they know them. This five day pack turns the Spanish your students bring to class into academic English they can use in science, mathematics, social studies, and reading. Built for Spanish speaking learners at WIDA Levels 1 to 3, Entering, Emerging, and early Developing (CEFR A1 to A2).
Grades 6-12, plus Adult Education and Higher Education.
WHAT'S INSIDE
- 88 slide teaching deck covering 72 cognate entries: 48 academic cognates across science, mathematics, social studies, and reading, 12 word patterns, and 12 false friends. Every entry prints the English target with its Spanish anchor, and meaning notes appear only where the spelling or the stress shifts.
- 72 audio files, one for every entry, embedded in the deck and included as loose MP3 files. Word entries play the English target. Pattern entries play the full exemplar set. False friend entries play the correct English word only: the trap word is never recorded.
- 30 page printable student packet: a quick start for every day, text attacks on real paragraphs, pattern builders, trap clinic pages, production tasks with sentence frames, and daily exit tickets.
- 9 pages of games: a cognate crossword with 24 clues, a cognate word search with 20 words, and cognate bingo.
- A two page bilingual family letter, Spanish first, then English, with a home cognate hunt families can do together.
- 16 pages of complete answer keys for every scored item, including the text attack counts and the exit ticket answers.
- Editable teacher tools in PowerPoint: 72 word wall cards, 12 trap alert cards, and 6 pattern posters, every card and poster ready to print and post.
- A 14 page teacher guide with the five day plan, the routines, the pattern chart, the trap table, and the complete audio index.

BILINGUAL SUPPORT ON EVERY PAGE
Directions run English first with a full Spanish support line under them. From the deck:
"Look at the word. It looks like a Spanish word you know. Say the English word."
"Mira la palabra. Se parece a una palabra en español que ya conoces. Di la palabra en inglés."
From the packet:
"My hypothesis is: the plant needs water."
"Mi hipótesis es: la planta necesita agua."
TWELVE PATTERNS THAT UNLOCK HUNDREDS OF WORDS
Students master the endings that carry whole families of words: ción to tion, dad to ty, oso to ous, mente to ly, ista to ist, al stays al, the first es drops, ico to ic, encia to ence and ancia to ance, ivo to ive, ura to ure, and ble stays ble. Every pattern ends with a build it yourself line, an unscored Spanish prompt students turn into English on their own.
TWELVE FALSE FRIENDS, TAUGHT HEAD ON
Asistir means attend, not assist. Éxito means success, not exit. The pack teaches all twelve traps directly, and both sides of every trap print in the packet, on the word wall cards, and on the trap alert cards. The audio never says the trap word, so students only ever hear the correct English.
ALIGNMENT
WIDA and CEFR alignment: Built for Spanish speaking learners at WIDA Levels 1 to 3 (Entering, Emerging, and early Developing) across the language of science, mathematics, social studies, and language arts. The pack supports CEFR A1 to A2 academic reading: students learn to recognize and use English academic words that come from Spanish, master twelve word patterns that unlock hundreds more, and learn the false friends that trap Spanish speakers. Spanish anchors and a Spanish family letter help students connect the English to the Spanish they already know.
ACTFL cross-reference: Novice Mid to Intermediate Low interpretive communication.
HOW TO USE
Present the deck in PowerPoint; the audio plays from the speaker icon on every entry slide, and the same 72 MP3 files are in the download if you prefer your own player. Print the student packet and the games single sided. Keys stay with the teacher. The tools file is fully editable, so you can print the word wall and the posters at any size and adjust any card to your class.
Five days from now, your students will open a textbook and see words they already own. That is what this pack is for.
