Find the Groups cover: directions tell students to sort common object cards into the correct category bowl
Introduce the sorting task and read the directions aloud
Category bowl mats labeled foods and shapes: students place matching picture cards in each bowl to practise sorting
Print and laminate as sorting mats for a small-group center
Category bowl mats labeled living and non-living: students sort picture cards of animals, plants and objects into each
Science tie-in mats for a living vs. non-living sort
Food picture cards to sort: lemon, hot dog, pancakes, watermelon, tomato and strawberry for the foods bowl
Cut apart for the foods sort; mix with other cards for more challenge
Shape picture cards to sort: circle, square, triangle, rectangle, rhombus and pentagon for the shapes bowl
Cut apart and add to the deck for a math shape sort
Living things picture cards: cow, pig, tree, horse, bird and boy for students to place in the living bowl
Cut apart; discuss why a tree counts as living
Non-living object cards: fence, silo, barn, pencil, school glue and scissors for students to sort as non-living
Mix with the living cards so students decide each one
