Flower Synonyms Activity – Vocabulary Match Set

Students sort individual word cards into groups of synonyms that share a similar meaning.

Students distinguish degrees of intensity among related words, such as big, huge, and humongous, when building a synonym cluster.

Students record a completed synonym group on the recording sheet, following the worked example format.

Print each word card on the cardstock color indicated at the bottom of its page (pink or yellow in this file) to help organize or distinguish separate card sets.

Use the title poster's five modeled clusters (small, big, mad, pretty, happy) as a worked introduction before handing over the larger open-ended word deck.

Have students use the recording sheet's worked example (happy, joyful, cheery, pleased, overjoyed, glad) as a model for the format expected on their own blank sheet.

Synonym identification — students match individual word cards to others with the same or similar meaning, such as grouping devour with eat-related words.

Shades-of-meaning sorting — the title poster models grouping words by intensity (big vs. humongous), a skill students extend to the larger card deck.

Written vocabulary recording — students write out a completed synonym group in list form on the recording sheet.
