Grade 8 Physical Science Vocabulary word search, scramble and crossword puzzle
I made this physical science vocabulary puzzle set for my 8th graders during our chemistry and physics unit. The kids could describe what they saw in experiments but had no idea what words like density, buoyancy, or velocity meant when we started learning about the properties of matter and motion. So I put together a word search, a word scramble, and a crossword using words like matter, mass, volume, density, buoyancy, force, motion, speed, velocity, acceleration, friction, gravity, inertia, momentum, energy, and work . I also included a few like "joule" and "newton" because they kept coming up in our class discussions about measurement . Nothing fancy — just puzzles to help the vocabulary finally stick.
The PDF is four pages. Three puzzles plus one answer key page. The word search works well for quiet time after recess or independent practice. The scramble gets them talking because they argue about the spelling of "acceleration" (it's a tricky one) or whether mass and weight are the same thing (they're not—they always have opinions about it) . The crossword I use for partners or as a review, and I usually have examples of each term written on the board or an anchor chart nearby for the kids who need the visual support to see the differences between related concepts like speed and velocity . I added a couple simple ball, ramp, and scale drawings but nothing too busy.
Works for 8th through 9th grade. Print and go. Sometimes I have early finishers give one example of potential energy and one example of kinetic energy on the back. The kids actually ask for these now.
