Irregular Verbs word search, scramble and crossword puzzle
I made this irregular verbs puzzle set for my 3rd and 4th graders during our grammar unit. The kids could add "ed" to make regular past tense verbs but had no idea what to do with words like "go," "see," or "eat." So I put together a word search, a word scramble, and a crossword using irregular verb pairs like go/went, see/saw, eat/ate, run/ran, sing/sang, drink/drank, swim/swam, begin/began, break/broke, choose/chose, speak/spoke, steal/stole, throw/threw, write/wrote, and drive/drove. Nothing fancy — just puzzles to help the irregular past tense finally stick.
The PDF is four pages. Three puzzles plus one answer key page. The word search works well for quiet time after recess. The scramble gets them talking because they argue about why "go" doesn't become "goed." The crossword I use for partners. I added a couple simple question mark and star drawings but nothing too busy.
Works for 3rd through 5th grade. Print and go. Sometimes I have early finishers list five irregular verbs and their past tense forms on the back. The kids actually ask for these now.
