Solve multi-step word problems using all four operations, as the rubric's Proficient level describes
Multiply and divide multi-digit numbers, including examples such as 184 x 6 = 1,104 and 96 ÷ 4 = 24
Compare fractions with unlike denominators and find equivalents, and add and subtract fractions with a common denominator as the story does with 3/8 + 2/8

Teaching tips

The guide's own advice is to accept more than one method - area model, partial products and the standard algorithm for multiplication, and partial quotients or how-many-groups reasoning for division
Each lesson is timed in the guide, with roughly 22 minutes given to independent practice and short mini-lesson and sharing segments either side, so a day can be shortened by cutting the sharing rather than the practice
Read the field-trip story once for its events, then again to identify the embedded distance, grouping and fraction calculations.

Monday is My Year in Numbers (skip counting and reflection, activities 1-4), Tuesday Math with Friends (multi-step problems and multi-digit multiplication and division, 5-8), Wednesday Math Story Adventure (story problems with multiple operations, 9-12), Thursday Number Detectives (rounding, fractions, factors and multiples, 13-16) and Friday Dreams for Fifth Grade (goals and creative reflection, 17-22).

What maths is actually inside the field-trip story?

Six calculations, embedded as the narrator tells it: 28 x 2 = 56 miles round trip, 96 students ÷ 3 = 32 per class, 5 x $12.50 = $62.50 for snacks, 5,830 - 1,245 = 4,585 fish in the other tanks, 3/8 + 2/8 = 5/8 of a pizza eaten with 3/8 left, and a 9:00 AM to 1:00 PM visit lasting four hours.

How are the open-ended activities handled in the key?

With teacher notes rather than answers. Activity 12, writing your own field-trip word problem, carries a note listing what to look for in a response; activity 17's goal-setting note describes SMART-style goals; and activity 20's acrostic is given as a sample with the caveat that responses vary widely.
