Product description

From the author

This is a Make Numbers to 10 Worksheet. This can be utilized for Kindergarten or 1st grade students.

This is a 2 page printable for each student to complete.

There are 5 columns on each of the pages.

The columns consist of making 1 through making 10. There are 10 problems for students to complete in each column. Students complete the missing second number in addition and subtraction equations to reach the target sum or difference.

At the bottom of the second page, there is a space for you to score this worksheet. A line for recording time taken appears before the score; provide a timer separately if timing the activity.

In order to accurately time track, you can:

-Have a stopwatch running and displayed on the board for students to write down their own time when they finish. By doing it this way, you can have an entire class of students complete their worksheets at the same time. This will only work if students are old enough to understand tracking time. A great way to implement this is to model it many times with practice pages.

-Complete this worksheet in small groups, a few students at a time, with the teacher or a paraprofessional. By doing it this way, you can give students attention and write their times down on your own. Making sure you have accurate times for students will allow you to implement this same worksheet repeatedly to measure and track growth.

This can be a great data tracking tool if you are looking for something to assess fact fluency for basic addition and subtraction.

Teaching tips & learning objectives

Learning objectives

  • Find the missing addend in an addition equation that equals a target number from 1 to 10

  • Find the missing number in a subtraction equation that equals a target number from 1 to 10

  • Recognize multiple addition and subtraction equations that reach the same target sum or difference

Teaching tips

  • Use the 'Time taken' and 'score out of 100' fields on page 2 to track fact-fluency growth for a student across repeated uses

  • Introduce the worksheet as untimed practice first, then reuse it as a timed fluency check once students are familiar with the format

  • Focus attention column by column, since each 'Make N' column mixes addition and subtraction problems that all reach the same target number

Skills covered

  • Missing-addend problem solving — students find the missing number in addition equations that equal a fixed target from 1 to 10.

  • Number composition and decomposition — students see multiple equations that reach the same target number within each column.

  • Fact fluency under time — students record their completion time and score, framing the sheet as a fluency check.

Good to know

Questions teachers ask about this resource

Are the addition and subtraction problems mixed together, or kept separate?

Mixed — each 'Make N' column combines addition problems (like 0 + __ = 5) and subtraction problems (like 10 – __ = 5) that all reach the same target number.

How is student performance recorded?

A line at the bottom of page 2 records the time taken and a score out of 100, since the worksheet totals one hundred problems across both pages.
