Teaching tips & learning objectives

Learning objectives

  • Summarize a story's plot by separating its Beginning, Middle and End into distinct parts.

  • State the moral, lesson or central message of a story.

  • Support a stated moral with specific evidence drawn from the text.

Teaching tips

  • Model the plot boxes with a familiar fable before discussing its moral.
  • Ask students to explain how their selected evidence supports the lesson they identified.
  • Use the organizer for a partner discussion before an independent response.

Skills covered

  • Plot sequencing — students separate a story into its Beginning, Middle and End in three distinct labeled spaces (pages 1-2).

  • Theme/moral identification — students state what they judge to be the moral of the story in a dedicated Moral column (pages 1-2).

  • Evidence-based reasoning — students cite specific text evidence to support the moral they identified, using the paired Text Evidence column (pages 1-2).
