Quotation Marks word search, scramble and crossword puzzle

I made this quotation marks puzzle set for my 3rd and 4th graders during our writing unit. The kids could write dialogue but had no idea where to put the quotation marks or what other punctuation needed to go inside them. So I put together a word search, a word scramble, and a crossword using words like quotation marks, quote, dialogue, said, asked, yelled, whispered, inside, outside, comma, period, question mark, exclamation point, speaker, and tag. Nothing fancy — just puzzles to help the quotation mark rules finally stick.

The PDF is four pages. Three puzzles plus one answer key page. The word search works well for quiet time after recess. The scramble gets them talking because they argue about whether the comma goes inside or outside the quotation marks. The crossword I use for partners. I added a couple simple speech bubble and quotation mark drawings but nothing too busy.

Works for 3rd through 5th grade. Print and go. Sometimes I have early finishers write a sentence of dialogue with quotation marks on the back. The kids actually ask for these now.
