Similes and Metaphors word search, scramble and crossword puzzle
I made this similes and metaphors puzzle set for my 3rd and 4th graders during our figurative language unit. The kids kept mixing up which one used "like" or "as" and which one said something was something else. So I put together a word search, a word scramble, and a crossword using simile examples like as brave as a lion, as fast as a cheetah, as cold as ice, runs like the wind, and metaphor examples like time is a thief, classroom was a zoo, heart of stone, blanket of snow, and light of my life. Nothing fancy — just puzzles to help the difference finally click.
The PDF is four pages. Three puzzles plus one answer key page. The word search works well for quiet time after recess. The scramble gets them talking because they argue about whether "as brave as a lion" is a simile or metaphor. The crossword I use for partners. I added a couple simple lion and clock drawings but nothing too busy.
Works for 3rd through 5th grade. Print and go. Sometimes I have early finishers write one simile and one metaphor on the back. The kids actually ask for these now.
