Social Narrative: Lockdown Drill | Young Adult

About This Product

This lockdown drill social narrative helps young adults follow their building's plan during a drill at school, in a transition program, or at a worksite, in a calm and non-graphic way.

Why I made this: Lockdown drills can be hard for students who need to know what is coming. I wanted a short, calm narrative that sticks to what the student does: listen, go to the spot, stay quiet, and wait for the all-clear. Everything else stays with the staff and the building's plan.

What's included:

• Cover and teacher how-to page with notes for checking your building's plan

• 6 short story sections on 3 narrative pages, each with a layout box

• Talk About It page with 7 discussion prompts

• Practice page with 4 calm, procedural situations at school, in a program, and at work

• My Plan page for school and work side by side

• Teacher discussion key with suggested answers

How I use it: Read it in a calm moment, not right after a real scare. Fill in My Plan with the real safe spot for school and for work. Practice only the student steps on the Practice page. Hand any real safety-plan questions to the building plan.

How this is different from my related products: My When Plans Change narratives are for younger students. This one is written for grades 9 to 12 and 18-21. It does not replace your building's safety plan. It helps students practice following it. Pair with the Fire Drill social narrative for the same calm routine voice.

Part of the Social Narratives series: young adult voice, story pages with visual layout boxes you can fill with photos from your own site, discussion prompts, practice situations, a My Plan page, and a teacher key.

Live siblings in this series (plain titles): First Day at a New Job; Riding the City Bus; When My Shift or Job Task Changes; Getting Feedback from My Boss; Taking Breaks at Work.

Pairs well with:

• Social Narrative: Fire Drill at Work or School

Who it is for: high school special education, transition programs for ages 18 to 21, job coaches, and work-based learning teams. Grades 9 to 12 and adult transition. Written for young adults, not preschool story voice.

What you download: one printable PDF, 9 pages, US Letter. Teacher discussion key included.

Real workplaces and sites vary. Cross out and write in the real names, places, and times from the student's site. Always follow the training and rules at the actual job, clinic, or building plan.
