Academic English for Spanish Speakers: Level-Up - WIDA 3-4, CEFR A2-B1

The Level-Up sequel to Spanish-English Cognates for Academic Success.

Your Spanish speaking students already own most of academic English. It is hiding inside the Spanish they speak. The first pack taught the cognates that match. This Level-Up pack teaches what comes next: the pairs whose spelling shifts on the way into English, the partial pairs where only part of the Spanish helps, a second level of word patterns that unlocks new words on sight, and the twelve false friends that trap students at this level.

After five days, students can unlock 48 academic cognates across the content areas, build new English words with 12 word patterns, reject the 12 false friends in context, and write claim and evidence sentences with 10 sentence frames.

THE 12 LEVEL 2 PATTERNS, BY NAME

ismo to ism, gía to gy, f to ph in Greek-origin words, sis stays sis, ario to ary, ema to em, sión to sion, ante and ente to ant and ent, ificar to ify, one letter becomes two, cto to ct, and the tico to tic bridge. Patterns are taught with 40 worked exemplars and a pattern lab of untaught words, so students leave able to unlock words nobody taught them.

THE 12 FALSE FRIENDS, BY NAME

decepción (disappointment, never deception), desgracia (misfortune), suceso (event), compromiso (commitment), facultad (a school or department inside a university), lectura (reading), conferencia (lecture), soportar (tolerate), recordar (remember), molestar (bother), simpático (nice), resumen (summary). Every trap is taught with both sides printed together, and the trap word is never heard in the audio: students learn traps by reading, never by hearing the wrong word modeled.

FIVE DAY PACING

Day 1 science, Day 2 mathematics, Day 3 social studies, Day 4 academic verbs and patterns 49 to 51, Day 5 patterns 52 to 60 and the false friends. Every day's core path is exactly 50 minutes, with extension material built in (70 to 75 minutes per day). An optional Day 6 runs the Academic Check as one 35 to 40 minute sitting.

BILINGUAL SUPPORT

Spanish anchors print with every entry. Meaning notes appear only where a pair is partial, a sense is narrow, or a trap needs its correction, so students grow out of translation dependence while the support stays where it earns its place.

WIDA and CEFR alignment: Built for Spanish speaking learners at WIDA Levels 3 to 4 (Developing and Expanding) across the language of science, mathematics, social studies, and language arts. The pack supports CEFR A2 to B1 academic reading and writing: students master 48 academic cognates including spelling-shifted and partial pairs, twelve second-level word patterns that unlock hundreds more words, the twelve false friends that trap students at this level, and ten sentence frames for content-area writing. AUDIO AND GOOGLE SLIDES

Every entry slide carries tap to play audio in PowerPoint and Keynote. Google Slides cannot import sound embedded inside a PowerPoint file, so the pack also ships all 82 recordings as standalone MP3s, and the teacher guide (page 4) gives the short Drive and Insert, Audio route for wiring sound into Slides.

GOOGLE FORMS AND CANVAS

The Forms version is a copy link form: open the link in the Forms Access file, click Make a copy, and the self-grading form is yours. Never request access to the master form; the copy link is the route. The Canvas QTI imports through the in-quiz route: open the quiz, choose Build, open More Quiz Actions, and choose Import Content.
