States of Matter word search, scramble and crossword puzzle

I made this states of matter puzzle set for my 3rd and 4th graders during our physical science unit. The kids knew ice, water, and steam but couldn't explain what was actually happening between solid, liquid, and gas. So I put together a word search, a word scramble, and a crossword using words like solid, liquid, gas, melting, freezing, evaporation, condensation, deposition, sublimation, particles, molecules, temperature, heat, water vapor, and state. Nothing fancy — just puzzles to help the vocabulary click.

The PDF is four pages. Three puzzles plus one answer key page. The word search works well for quiet time after recess. The scramble gets them talking because they argue about whether fog is a gas or tiny liquid drops. The crossword I use for partners. I added a couple simple particle arrangement drawings for each state but nothing too busy.

Works for 2nd through 5th grade. Print and go. Sometimes I have early finishers draw what the particles look like in a solid, liquid, and gas on the back. The kids actually ask for these now.
