Look Inside · 10 pages

Happy Father's Day directed art lesson cover showing three colored DAD cards with burst bubbles, stars and a mustache
Show students the finished card designs before drawing
Drawing rules and materials list: draw lightly in pencil, retrace when satisfied, use a ruler when told; paper and eraser
Review before handing out supplies
Step 1: students lightly write DAD in capital letters mid-page, or choose PAPA, FATHER, GRANDPA, UNCLE or a name
Starting point; lets students personalize who the card is for
Step 2: students lightly trace around the outside of each letter in DAD to begin turning it into bubble letters
Model this tracing step on the board
Step 3: students erase the inside pencil lines of DAD, leaving hollow bubble letters ready to be outlined again
Pause so everyone erases before moving on
Step 4: students trace once around the entire outside of the DAD bubble letters to give them a double outline
Check outlines are complete before the burst step
Step 5: students draw a spiky triangular burst bubble around the DAD bubble letters, like a comic-book shout shape
Demonstrate the zigzag burst shape slowly
Step 6: students trace around the burst bubble one more time, creating a double zigzag outline around DAD
Final outlining step before decorating
Step 7: students decorate around DAD using sample pictures such as stars, crowns, a mustache, tools, a tie and hearts
Open-ended decorating time; encourage their own ideas
Completed example: DAD in a burst bubble surrounded by stars, hearts, a crown, a mustache, a screwdriver and a wrench
Finished model to display while students work
