If your students have been introduced to systems of equations, I have just the product they’ll love. This is a Systems of Equations Color by Number that can be implemented at any time. It is great for an introduction or a review.

This is great for middle and high school students in 8th and 9th grade. The objective is for students to correctly solve the equation and apply their understanding.

This printable can be utilized in a variety of ways:

--Homework

--Early finisher activity

--Small group activity

--Center activity

Directions for students: Solve problems 1-10. Circle your answer and its corresponding color. Make a note of the problem number. On the coloring page, find the problem number and color its image with the appropriate color. (Example: if the answer to # 1 is yellow, color each image with “1” on it yellow).

There is an answer key for the questions. There is not an answer key for the completed coloring page.

  • Verify a candidate ordered pair against both equations of a system

  • Translate each solved problem into the correct color for its numbered regions

Teaching tips

  • Have students show their elimination or substitution work beside each system before circling — the sheet itself only records the chosen pair

  • Check the algebra and selected answers before colouring; the picture alone does not establish that each system was solved correctly

  • Print the question sheets and coloring picture for students and hold back the closing key section for yourself

Skills covered

  • Solving linear systems — students work ten systems such as −3x − 8y = 20 with −5x + y = 19 and choose among three coordinate-pair answers.

  • Recognizing special cases — question 8 offers NO SOLUTION among its choices, so students must detect when a system's equations are inconsistent.

  • Applying a colour code — the circled answer's color is applied to every region carrying that problem number on the picture.

Questions teachers ask about this resource

Do all ten systems have exactly one solution?

No. Question 8 is an inconsistent system: multiplying its second equation by −3 gives the same left side as the first but a different constant. Its answer is no solution.

Is a particular solving method required?

No method is prescribed — the systems work with substitution or elimination. Question 3 even supplies 2y = 12 as its second equation, letting students find y immediately, while others need an equation multiplied first.
