The Nitrogen Cycle word search, scramble and crossword puzzle

I made this nitrogen cycle puzzle set for my 4th graders during our Earth science unit. The kids knew plants needed air but had no idea that nitrogen is everywhere and most living things can't use it directly. So I put together a word search, a word scramble, and a crossword using words like nitrogen, atmosphere, bacteria, soil, plants, animals, decomposition, ammonia, nitrates, fixation, fertilizer, waste, and cycle. Nothing fancy — just puzzles to help the vocabulary stick even though the concept is tricky.

The PDF is four pages. Three puzzles plus one answer key page. The word search works well for quiet time after recess. The scramble gets them talking because they argue about how bacteria help plants get nitrogen. The crossword I use for partners. I added a couple simple soil and bacteria drawings but nothing too busy.

Works for 4th through 5th grade. Print and go. Sometimes I have early finishers write one sentence explaining why nitrogen is important on the back. The kids actually ask for these now.
