The Statue of Liberty word search, scramble and crossword puzzle
I made this Statue of Liberty puzzle set for my 2nd and 3rd graders during our US symbols unit. The kids had seen pictures of the statue but had no idea where it came from, what it stands for, or what the torch means. So I put together a word search, a word scramble, and a crossword using words like liberty, statue, France, gift, 1886, New York, harbor, island, copper, green, torch, crown, tablet, freedom, and welcome. Nothing fancy — just puzzles to help the story finally stick.
The PDF is four pages. Three puzzles plus one answer key page. The word search works well for quiet time after recess. The scramble gets them talking because they argue about why the statue is green. The crossword I use for partners. I added a couple simple torch and crown drawings but nothing too busy.
Works for 1st through 4th grade. Print and go. Sometimes I have early finishers write what the Statue of Liberty holds in each hand on the back. The kids actually ask for these now.
