Tools Scientists Use word search, scramble and crossword puzzle
I made this tools scientists use puzzle set for my 3rd and 4th graders during our first science unit of the year. The kids knew what a ruler and a thermometer were but had no idea what a microscope or a graduated cylinder was for. So I put together a word search, a word scramble, and a crossword using words like microscope, hand lens, beaker, flask, test tube, dropper, scale, balance, thermometer, ruler, measuring cup, magnet, compass, stopwatch, and safety goggles. Nothing fancy — just puzzles to help the tool names and their jobs stick.
The PDF is four pages. Three puzzles plus one answer key page. The word search works well for quiet time after recess. The scramble gets them talking because they argue about whether a beaker and a flask are the same thing. The crossword I use for partners. I added a couple simple drawings of a microscope, a beaker, and a hand lens but nothing too busy.
Works for 2nd through 5th grade. Print and go. Sometimes I have early finishers pick one tool and write what it measures or does on the back. The kids actually ask for these now.
