  • Add two identical numbers (a double) using place-value decomposition, such as splitting 722+722 into 700+700 and 22+22.

  • Use a known double to solve a near-double addition problem by adjusting the sum up or down by 1 or 2.

  • Work backward from a target sum to find the number that, doubled, produces it, using halving.

Teaching tips

  • Model the worked answer key's decomposition method (e.g., 700+700 then 22+22 then add) before assigning the worksheet, since students must reproduce this exact strategy, not just find a sum.

  • Point out that the four 'what two numbers double to make X' problems require halving, the reverse operation of the six straight addition problems above them.

  • Use the final two large-number problems (1246+1246 and halving 6430) as an extension after students are comfortable with the two- and three-digit problems.
