Teaching tips & learning objectives

Learning objectives

  • Read familiar short words in questions and statements

  • Trace model text

  • Use a word bank to write a response

Teaching tips

  • Model the how-to routine: add name/date, draw, trace and write. Use the six activity pages for practice.

  • Read the pictured prompt and help students turn their response into a complete sentence. The egg and pig banks differ from the yes/no banks on the first four pages.

  • Treat A fat cat as a tracing phrase rather than an answer key or full sentence. Add a verb when modeling a complete sentence.

Skills covered

  • Short-word reading: read familiar nouns and descriptions, including CVC words such as cat and pig, the VCC word egg, and the longer word dotty

  • Tracing and spacing: trace printed statements and questions

  • Response writing: use a word bank to answer picture questions
