Trains Reading Comprehension Passage - Cored Ed Encyclopedia

This trains reading comprehension with lesson plan includes: Visualization (on the front cover) Start your lesson by taking a minute to think and share something about the topic. Read the script aloud (slowly), perhaps prepare some music or sound effects. Student close their eyes and let their imaginations wander. Students open their eyes, read the question aloud and give them a few minutes to complete. Ask a few students to share or keep answers until the end to compare with what they learn in the passage. Pre-Reading Trivia Students will write down one thing they already know about the subject and then read five more facts and discuss. These facts are fun, and the students will enjoy learning about the subject before reading more. Give 1 minute for students to write what they already know (no pressure—best guess is fine). Read the five facts together. After each fact, do ask a student for their opinion, was it surprising? Set a purpose by asking students to highlight/underline one fact they want to learn more about during the reading. Reading Passage The text is a high-interest reading passage with set paragraphs, roughly three to four paragraphs long. It contains a variety of themes about the topic, anywhere from history to technology. The passage is between 250 and 350 words in length. First, ask students to look at the headings and see what they’ll learn about today. What do they know about the topic/heading? First read options: Teacher read-aloud (best for support). Partner reading (paragraph by paragraph). While reading, students underline important details, and vocabulary words they think may come up in the questions section. Mixed Questions The first question page contains four multiple-choice questions, each with a choice of four answers, and three written response questions that require a sentence or two from the student. Students complete the mcqs first independently, then review quickly as a class. For the 3 written responses, try to get students giving the answer with some form of evidence: “I think ___ because the text says ___.” If students get stuck, send them back to check the passage. Vocabulary Questions Practice seven key words from the text in this section across two activities. First section is scrambled words where students will unscramble three words given a clue for each. The second section is a word to meaning matching activity. Before starting, have some students read out words they underlined in the passage. Ask students to say the word and read aloud the sentence(s) around each word. Ask students to do scrambled words and the matching exercise in pairs then go through answers as a class. For the scrambled spelling task, get four pairs to come up to the board and write the words for extra practice with the other student reading out the clue. For the matching task, prompt students to give full sentences: “I matched ___ with ___ because ___.” Creative Writing In this question, the student will be required to write a five to eight sentence paragraph on a question related to the topic. Before starting, ask students write down 3 key ideas they are going to include in their piece. Ask students for ideas to share around the class to help those struggling. Pro writing expectations: 5–8 sentences At least 2 facts or details from the passage At least 2 vocabulary words from the previous page Students read their paragraphs while classmates listen for facts and vocabulary words. Extension Activities This page is optional for fast finishers or to take home. There are several activities, each one requiring a different skill. Do some, do none, do all, completely optional - but you will feel reassured knowing every possibility is planned for. Includes summary writting question. Answer Key There are answers for the multiple-choice questions, written response questions have sample answers, vocabulary answers and if there is a summary question then a sample summary will be provided as well. Describes how a steam locomotive works (water becomes steam, steam pushes pistons, pistons help turn wheels). Compares train power types—steam, diesel (engine spins a generator), and electric (overhead wire or third rail). Shows how high-speed rail was designed for speed (special tracks, trains shaped to slice through wind), including Japan’s Tōkaidō Shinkansen (1964) “bullet train.” QA check (support pages vs. passage): The pre-reading trivia uses the word “friction,” but the main passage describes the idea as “rubbing.” Other questions and vocabulary (boiler, pistons, diesel, generator, third rail, high-speed rail) match the passage. Writing Prompts Writing prompts are designed to continue the theme or lessons learned in the story. Students are persuaded to write in a variety of ways and each prompt includes several cues to help. Kindergartners and first graders will get a ton of practice reading AM words with these fluency activities. All target words are part of the AM word family. Students will practice reading these CVC words in isolation as well as in context of a simple sentence or passage. What is Included: Word Fluency Strips - These three strips only contain AM words in isolation. Students will practice reading the words on the strips until words are mastered. Sentence Strips - The sentence strips contain AM words in the context of simple sentences. Sentence Fluency Worksheet - Students will read the simple sentences then pick one sentence to illustrate in the box at the bottom of the worksheet. Reading Comprehension Passage - Students will read the story containing AM words three times then answer two comprehension questions and draw a picture to illustrate the story. Sentence Pyramids - There are eight sentence pyramids where students will read each sentence, adding a new word on each line. How to Use: These activities word very well in a reading or phonics center for students to work on independently or with a partner. They make great small group activities. Teachers can pull aside small groups of students who need extra practice reading AM words with fluency. Consonant Blends Phonic Games

Here are five phonic games to help in the teaching of consonant blends. Many children struggle with consonant blends, but these games can help take the stress out of learning! All children like a game- not least for the one to one time with an adult! How to use The games are easy to make and easy to play, needing no other equipment than in some cases a feely bag/little box in which to put cards. Simply print out the pages needed for each game and play - print and play. To make the games last longer, I suggest laminating the boards and the picture/letter cards as appropriate. What is included? Game 1: Match each blend to the picture that begins with it. Game 2: Cut up the word cards and take it in turns to find the consonant blend missing letter cards - either of an initial or final blend. Game 3: Find the missing letter of an initial blend Game 4: Find the initial blend for each word card Game 5: Read and match the CVCC word with a short vowel sound to the picture Who are these games for? Children of all abilities will love these games . They have been tried and tested on many children. They were devised by a teacher with many years of experience in teaching children of all abilities to read and spell with phonics. They are best played one-to-one with an adult so that the adult can model sounding out and reading words with a consonant blend. Once a child is more confident, two children can be asked to play together while an adult supervises. As the children play these games , the sie teacher will observe the reading and spelling strategies being used by the child to ensure that the child is noy learning to guess. Phonic games help to take the stress out of learning so they are great for pupils with special needs (including those with dyslexia) who need that bit of extra practice.

This erosion reading comprehension with lesson plan includes: Visualization (on the front cover) Start your lesson by taking a minute to think and share something about the topic. Read the script aloud (slowly), perhaps prepare some music or sound effects. Student close their eyes and let their imaginations wander. Pre-Reading Trivia Students will write down one thing they already know about the subject and then read five more facts and discuss. These facts are fun, and the students will enjoy learning about the subject before reading more. Give 1 minute for students to write what they already know (no pressure—best guess is fine). Read the five facts together. After each fact, do ask a student for their opinion, was it surprising? Set a purpose by asking students to highlight/underline one fact they want to learn more about during the reading. Reading Passage The text is a high-interest reading passage with set paragraphs, roughly three to four paragraphs long. It contains a variety of themes about the topic, anywhere from history to technology. The passage is between 250 and 350 words in length. First, ask students to look at the headings and see what they’ll learn about today. What do they know about the topic/heading? First read options: Teacher read-aloud (best for support). Partner reading (paragraph by paragraph). While reading, students underline important details, and vocabulary words they think may come up in the questions section. Mixed Questions The first question page contains four multiple-choice questions, each with a choice of four answers, and three written response questions that require a sentence or two from the student. Students complete the mcqs first independently, then review quickly as a class. For the 3 written responses, try to get students giving the answer with some form of evidence: “I think ___ because the text says ___.” If students get stuck, send them back to check the passage. Vocabulary Questions Practice seven key words from the text in this section across two activities. First section is scrambled words where students will unscramble three words given a clue for each. The second section is a word to meaning matching activity. Before starting, have some students read out words they underlined in the passage. Ask students to say the word and read aloud the sentence(s) around each word. Ask students to do scrambled words and the matching exercise in pairs then go through answers as a class. For the scrambled spelling task, get four pairs to come up to the board and write the words for extra practice with the other student reading out the clue. For the matching task, prompt students to give full sentences: “I matched ___ with ___ because ___.” Creative Writing In this question, the student will be required to write a five to eight sentence paragraph on a question related to the topic. Before starting, ask students write down 3 key ideas they are going to include in their piece. Ask students for ideas to share around the class to help those struggling. Pro writing expectations: 5–8 sentences At least 2 facts or details from the passage At least 2 vocabulary words from the previous page Students read their paragraphs while classmates listen for facts and vocabulary words.
