This is a Let’s Start Reading Volume 2: Fun Activities Packet. This is a 12-page packet filled with a variety of activities for students to enjoy. On the first 3 pages, students will read each sentence then, circle the correct item. -There are 3 boxes on each page. -Within each box, there is a sentence and two pictures to choose from at the end. The sentence frames are: I have a ball. I have a hat. I have a doll. I have a bike. I have a cup. I have a pen. I have a train. I have a van. I have a book. On the next 3 pages, students will write in the correct words to complete the sentence. it will be a fill in the blank for the students. It will follow the same sentence frame: “I have a boat.” Students will get to practice writing these same words. On the next 3 pages, students will read each sentence and then draw a line to the correct item. The correct item will be the correct picture of the object they just read. As a final animal review, students will trace each word. You can print and laminate these pages so they can be used over and over again. These pages can be used in small group with the teacher, or they can be used during center times amongst student groups.

Here is a fun, print 'n play phonic game for the split digraph a-e! Help your pupils to grasp the tricky split digraph concept as they play! Who is the a-e game suitable for? All learners of phonics, including young children, SEN/special needs, ESL etc... Aims and Objectives Some children, when starting to learn about the long /a-e/ sound will start to make every /a/ into a long /a-e/ sound. While this is common among all children, some children need more help to overcome this difficulty. Therefore, this game has two aims: 1.To help children to be able to hear the long vowel sound a-e in words 2.To help children understand that some words have a short /a/ and some have a long /a-e/; the child must listen to hear which word has which - not guess. How to play: This is a game for two ore three players, one of which should be an adult. The game can be played with either pictures or sounds. Each player takes a game board (either pictures or sounds) which will indicate whether the player should listen for words with a short /a/ sound or a long /a-e/ sound. The adult reads a word on the word card, and the pupils must listen for 'e' or no 'e'? If the pupil has the sound/ picture on his/her board, she/he covers up a space. the winner fills hi/her board first. Teaching tips: Help children to hear the vowel sound by emphasizing it and stretching it out. Help the child to do this as well. Have fun - as this eases children over those tricky spots! This ink reading comprehension contains the following: Pre-Reading Trivia Students will write down one thing they already know about the subject and then read five more facts and discuss. These facts are fun, and the students will enjoy learning about the subject before reading more. Reading Passage The text is a high-interest reading passage with set paragraphs, roughly three to four paragraphs long. It contains a variety of themes about the topic, anywhere from history to technology. The passage is between 250 and 350 words in length. Mixed Questions The first question page contains four multiple-choice questions, each with a choice of four answers, and three written response questions that require a sentence or two from the student. Vocabulary Questions Practice seven key words from the text in this section across two activities. First section is scrambled words where students will unscramble three words given a clue for each. The second section is a word to meaning matching activity. Creative Writing In this question, the student will be required to write a five to eight sentence paragraph on a question related to the topic. Extension Activities This page is optional for fast finishers or to take home. There are several activities, each one requiring a different skill. Do some, do none, do all, completely optional - but you will feel reassured knowing every possibility is planned for. Charlotte's Web and Stuart Little Activities Compare and Contrast Characters

In this activity, students practice the skill of comparing characters from the novels Charlotte's Web and Stuart Little, by E.B. White. Graphic organizers can be a great way to help students organize their thoughts. The graphic organizer I chose for this activity is a Venn Diagram . Venn Diagrams are perfect for comparing and contrasting two things. There are several characters in Charlotte's Web and Stuart Little that work well for this activity. I've created three worksheets where students will be comparing Wilbur and Stuart, Charlotte and Margalo, and Templeton and Snowbell. This activity works well with second through fourth graders who have read the stories. You could hand out the graphic organizers at the beginning of reading and have students add to them as you read through the book. Or, you could wait until you've finished reading. Depending on the level of your students, you could have them list words to describe the characters on a sheet of paper. They could then use that when filling out these diagrams. A great extension to this activity would be if you want students to write a paragraph comparing the two characters. The graphic organizer would help them organize their thoughts into a good paragraph. One of the 3rd grade Reading for Literature standards is comparing two different stories written by the same author. E.B. White is a great author for this age group, and Charlotte's Web and Stuart Little are two great stories to compare.

AM Words Fluency Practice

Kindergartners and first graders will get a ton of practice reading AM words with these fluency activities. All target words are part of the AM word family. Students will practice reading these CVC words in isolation as well as in context of a simple sentence or passage. What is Included: Word Fluency Strips - These three strips only contain AM words in isolation. Students will practice reading the words on the strips until words are mastered. Sentence Strips - The sentence strips contain AM words in the context of simple sentences. Sentence Fluency Worksheet - Students will read the simple sentences then pick one sentence to illustrate in the box at the bottom of the worksheet. Reading Comprehension Passage - Students will read the story containing AM words three times then answer two comprehension questions and draw a picture to illustrate the story. Sentence Pyramids - There are eight sentence pyramids where students will read each sentence, adding a new word on each line. How to Use: These activities word very well in a reading or phonics center for students to work on independently or with a partner. They make great small group activities. Teachers can pull aside small groups of students who need extra practice reading AM words with fluency. The sentence fluency worksheets and reading comprehension page can be utilized as homework to send home for students to complete. Skills Assessed: These fluency worksheets and activities assess students' ability to read AM words in isolation or in the context of sentences. Students will practice reading comprehension skills with the reading passage page. The worksheets are print and go, no prep activity for teachers to prepare for students. They just need to be printed out and given to students to complete. The sentence strips and pyramid cards need to be printed and cut apart. These low prep cards can also be laminated for durability if desired.

AN Words Emergent Reader: Dan

With this decodable book, you will practice reading a short story that contains CVC words and simple sight words. Kindergartners and first graders can gain practice reading words that contain the CVC words from the AN word family. What is Included: There is one emergent reader titled "Dan," which includes one cover page and five pages for students to color and read. How to Use: Students will color each page of the book, cut the pages apart, and then assemble the book, making sure the cover page is on top. The subsequent pages can be placed in any order and still be read with meaning. Use a stapler to attach the pages together. The repetitive nature of each page allows students to have success with reading and gives them extra practice with target words! The story and sentences in the book contain simple sight words and words from the word family targeted. This makes them easy for beginning readers to have success with creating and reading each book. Other Uses for this Book: The teacher may create the book by coloring, laminating, and assembling. The book can be placed in a classroom library or reading center for students to read during an independent reading time or during their center time. Students can create their own book to take home and share their reading skills with their parents. This game will help your children to learn to hear the sounds ‘ar’ and ‘or’ in words and to read words containing these sounds. This game is black and white for eco-printing at home, or to send home. A colour version can be found in the Lilibette's Resources store. Who is it for: Children who are learning the digraphs ar and or. Those children working in Phase 3 of Letters and Sounds Those children working in Speed Set 2 of RWI. Who can use the ar/or game? Teachers, parents, private tutors - anyone who needs it! How to make the game Print out pages 4 to 9, on card. Cut out the picture cards (pages 6 - 8). Cut up the ar/or cards (page 9). Write ‘ar’ on the back of one baseboard (pages 4/5) and ‘or’ on the back of the other. Write ‘ar’ or ‘or’ as appropriate on the backs of the picture cards. Find a bag or small box to put the small letter ar/or cards in. How to play the game This is a game for 2 players. It is best if an adult plays with each child individually first and then when each child in a pair is confident, they can play in together. The game can be played with the picture and word cards alone, without the ar/or cards - as a simple matching game. This is how it has been designed to be played: Take a baseboard each. This will decide who is collecting ‘ar’ pictures and ‘or’ pictures. Choose 6 ar and 6 or cards (you can choose different pictures each time you play). Scatter the picture cards picture side up. Take it in turns to take an ‘ar’/’or’ letter card from the bag/box. If the player with the ‘ar’ baseboards picks an ‘ar’ card, s/he may choose a picture with the ar sound in. Likewise with ‘or’. Players may only turn the picture card over to check that they are correct. If not, the picture card is replaced. The winner is the first to fill his/her card. Do: Demonstrate how to sound out a word when it is your go and invite your pupil’s help, so they get even more practice. Look at the cards that are left. What sound do they have in them?
