This math project allows students in 5th, 6th, 7th, or 8th grade to apply their knowledge of perimeter, area, volume, financial literacy, and decimal calculations to a realistic & creative situation: planning a fun new park! They will design a new park that includes different areas for swimming, playing, eating, resting, walking, and even skating! Students will use their knowledge of perimeter of right-angled shapes when planning the size and shape of the park & the amount of fencing required use their knowledge of area when splitting the park up into different sections for activities use their knowledge of volume when considering filling the pool in their park use their knowledge of money math/decimal calculations when determining the grand total price of the entire park project. Each section has a different cost- a great introduction to unit rate. For example, paths are much less expensive than a playground, while grassy areas cost less than the swimming pool does. I ask my students to calculate by hand, but you can allow yours to use a calculator as well. This project gets students using their creative and logical problem solving skills, organizational skills, careful calculating methods, and neat drawing and colouring. It is a great project to use for a summative assessment at the end of a unit or to show parents at parent-teacher conferences. Playing the Game 4 games Arrow in top-right to advance through each slide. Game 1 - What is the Word? Clue will appear automatically and students need to guess the word. Press the card on the top of the pile to show the answer (5 questions) Game 2 - Unscramble. This fun math project includes clear step-by-step instructions to show your students how to make a circle graph. This is a great way to review several math skills while showing how useful they can be! Tasks include: - Writing a survey question: Your students learn to write a question that has exactly six possible answers. - Collecting data: Your students can ask the members of your class their question. They collect data using a tally chart. They need to ask exactly 25 people. - Recording results as a fraction: Once they have their data, they can turn each answer into a fraction with a denominator of 25. - Calculating an equivalent fraction: Then, they calculate an equivalent fraction with a denominator of 100. - Working with percent (written as a decimal): Finally, they turn that fraction into a percent in decimal form. They use this percent to multiply by 360 degrees in a circle (they can use a calculator for this part) to find out how many degrees each answer gets. - Drawing angles with a protractor: They carefully draw the six angles in their pie chart, one by one. - Labeling a graph: They label the graph to make it clear for others to read. Grades to Use WIth: This math project works well in the middle grades (4-8) when students know how to use protractors, calculate with fractions and decimals, and make graphs. It could also work well in a high school special education classroom. Looking for a way to help your students actually understand alliteration without it turning into a bunch of random or overly silly sentences? I’ve found that alliteration can be one of those concepts students either overdo or don’t quite grasp, especially when they’re trying to apply it in their own writing. Having a bit of structure really makes a difference. This activity gives students a starting point, so they’re not guessing what to do. Instead of just identifying alliteration, they’re using it in their own poems, which helps it stick. The examples make it easier for them to see what’s expected, and the templates guide them through the process without taking away their creativity. In my experience, this works well whether you’re introducing alliteration for the first time or revisiting it during a poetry unit. You can model a few examples together, then let students have a go using the templates. Some will need a bit more support, and others will run with it—but the structure is there for both. Once they’ve drafted their poem, they can create a final version to display. It’s one of those activities where students actually enjoy reading each other’s work, which is always a win. There’s also a simple lesson outline included if you want something easy to follow, along with a rubric to make marking more straightforward. It fits nicely into literacy rotations, whole-class lessons, or even as something to leave for early finishers when you need a meaningful task that doesn’t require a lot of extra explanation. This Aztecs reading comprehension with lesson plan includes: Visualization (on the front cover) Start your lesson by taking a minute to think and share something about the topic. Read the script aloud (slowly), perhaps prepare some music or sound effects. Student close their eyes and let their imaginations wander. Students open their eyes, read the question aloud and give them a few minutes to complete. Ask a few students to share or keep answers until the end to compare with what they learn in the passage. Pre-Reading Trivia Students will write down one thing they already know about the subject and then read five more facts and discuss. These facts are fun, and the students will enjoy learning about the subject before reading more. Give 1 minute for students to write what they already know (no pressure—best guess is fine). Read the five facts together. After each fact, do ask a student for their opinion, was it surprising? Set a purpose by asking students to highlight/underline one fact they want to learn more about during the reading. Reading Passage The text is a high-interest reading passage with set paragraphs, roughly three to four paragraphs long. It contains a variety of themes about the topic, anywhere from history to technology. The passage is between 250 and 350 words in length. First, ask students to look at the headings and see what they’ll learn about today. What do they know about the topic/heading? First read options: Teacher read-aloud (best for support). Partner reading (paragraph by paragraph). While reading, students underline important details, and vocabulary words they think may come up in the questions section. Mixed Questions The first question page contains four multiple-choice questions, each with a choice of four answers, and three written response questions that require a sentence or two from the student. Students complete the mcqs first independently, then review quickly as a class. For the 3 written responses, try to get students giving the answer with some form of evidence: “I think ___ because the text says ___.” If students get stuck, send them back to check the passage. Vocabulary Questions Practice seven key words from the text in this section across two activities. First section is scrambled words where students will unscramble three words given a clue for each. The second section is a word to meaning matching activity. Before starting, have some students read out words they underlined in the passage. Ask students to say the word and read aloud the sentence(s) around each word. Ask students to do scrambled words and the matching exercise in pairs then go through answers as a class. For the scrambled spelling task, get four pairs to come up to the board and write the words for extra practice with the other student reading out the clue. For the matching task, prompt students to give full sentences: “I matched ___ with ___ because ___.” Creative Writing In this question, the student will be required to write a five to eight sentence paragraph on a question related to the topic. Before starting, ask students write down 3 key ideas they are going to include in their piece. Ask students for ideas to share around the class to help those struggling. Pro writing expectations: 5–8 sentences At least 2 facts or details from the passage At least 2 vocabulary words from the previous page Students read their paragraphs while classmates listen for facts and vocabulary words. Extension Activities This page is optional for fast finishers or to take home. There are several activities, each one requiring a different skill.
