Types of Paragraphs - Make a Magazine Project: How to Write Paragraphs

Types of Paragraphs: Make a Magazine Project: Narrative, Descriptive, Persuasive, Compare & Contrast, Cause & Effect, How-To Paragraphs. This fun and engaging mini-unit helps teach paragraph writing while keeping students interested because they are creating their very own magazine! How to Use: Print a hamburger paragraph handout for each student. Review the parts of an effective paragraph: topic sentence, juicy details, and concluding sentence. Then teach your students about the six types of paragraphs they are going to learn how to write: narrative, descriptive, persuasive, compare and contrast, cause and effect, and how-to. Each kind of paragraph will be a different part of the magazine. A persuasive paragraph becomes a letter to the editor. A narrative paragraph will be a personal story. A descriptive paragraph will be a travel article. A compare and contrast paragraph will be a product review. A cause and effect paragraph will be a current events article, and a how-to paragraph will be a home maintenance piece. Use one period of class time to draft each paragraph. Students get a handout with some sample ideas and then come up with their own. They draft a 5-sentence paragraph that will become their "article." After each draft, show students the editing handout, and encourage them to edit their own work or trade with a friend. You can also have students hand in their drafts each day for you to edit as well. Once students have their six edited drafts, they can either type them OR write good copies on the included templates. Put them all together, make a title page, and each student now has their own magazine! Extensions: Early finishers can make a crossword puzzle using an online website, or create their own advertisement for their magazine! Nonfiction under the sea project

Put your students' concept knowledge and skills to the test with this excellent nonfiction research project. Students are required to follow a set of instructions to complete their research project. They will need to select a sea animal/creature to base their research on and come up with a catchy title page. There is a set of categories to pick from for chapter headings. Fill in the table of contents with chosen headings and page numbers, select a subheading for each heading allocated, and research and find factual information about the selected animal, including photographs/illustrations of information and a caption. At the end, students will be required to complete a glossary with difficult words they encountered and their definitions, fill in an index with keywords and page numbers those words can be found on, and finally, a bibliography with references they used to find out their information. To Build A Fire by Jack London (Alternate Ending Writing Project)

This is a super fun project I've done each year with my ESL classes but it would be perfect to do with any with middle school or high school students! In this packet, students will complete a plot diagram for the story, identify a spot where a critical error was made (there are a few to pick from so everyone's stories will be different!) and then create a NEW plot diagram starting from that point! This helps the students create an alternate ending! *Need a follow up activity? Read the original 1902 version of 'To Build a Fire" and compare it to the better known remake from 1908!*

Punctuation Pasta Project

This is a Punctuation Pasta Project for big kids! This project is focused on commas, parentheses, and dashes with a bonus quotation mark review included. I love room transformations; students are going to remember moments and therefore, the content associated with those moments much more easily. Create an Italian restaurant in your classroom with plastic tablecloths or red and white butcher paper. I bought glass candleholders & electric tealights at the dollar store that I repurpose for other room transformations. Italian music/photos on the board, a crockpot full of simmering tomato sauce & some breadsticks on the tables hit all the senses! Place a table tent and one punctuation card per pair of students on each table. You will also need a plate or bowl full of dried pasta. For this particular lesson, you will need spaghetti or fettuccini for the dashes, small elbow macaroni for commas & quotation marks, & large elbow macaroni for parentheses. Students simply place the pasta in the spots on the cards where the punctuation is missing. I do one activity at a time (have students complete with their partner and then go over answer key before distributing next card). Early finishers can work on pasta plate practice activity. This lesson was specifically designed for 6th grade, and the accompanying PowerPoint teaches L.6.2a, but the pasta punctuation cards can work with L.4.2a, and L.5.2a, as well. There is a companion slideshow that will provide rules, practice and examples!

Fall Domino Game Numbers 0–30 and Number Words This autumn domino game is a hands-on way for students to practice both numbers and number words from 0 to 30. I introduced it during the fall term with my grade 1 class, and the students immediately understood the rules because it follows the familiar domino format. The seasonal design added a nice touch, but the main benefit was the repeated practice with connecting numbers and words. The set includes 68 cards in total, with two different versions. One version shows the standard number words, while the second version breaks the words into syllables. I noticed that the syllable version was especially helpful for younger readers or for students who still found longer number words challenging. Words such as “seventeen” or “twenty-four” became easier to read and pronounce when broken down into smaller parts. The game can be adjusted by number range, which makes it easy to differentiate. With beginners, I often start with 0–10 so that the game feels manageable. Later I expand the set to 0–20, and eventually the full 0–30 for more advanced groups. Because of this flexibility, the same set can be reused throughout the year with different levels of learners. There are several ways to play. In small groups, students take turns matching numbers with the correct number words, trying to be the first to play all their cards. In a whole-class setting, I sometimes spread the cards across the floor and let students work together to build one long domino chain. This version turns the game into a collaborative activity and gets everyone moving while still practicing number recognition. Preparation is simple. Print the cards, cut them apart, and laminate them if you want to reuse the set in future years. I keep mine in small envelopes labeled with 0–10, 0–20, and 0–30 so I can quickly pull the right range for each group. The activity works well in math centers, small group rotations, or even as a fun review during October. Warm regards, Lernfitness Did You Know?
