This Entrepreneur Fair Mini Unit is completely ready-to-go for your intermediate or middle school classroom. It walks students through the entire process of starting a small business step-by-step. Use it over several weeks, culminating with an Entrepreneur Fair in your classroom where students can buy each other's products and services. This will be the kind of hands-on, applicable learning students don't soon forget! How to Use: Print a booklet (double-sided) for each student with pages 2-7. Print a single page 8 for each student. o What is an Entrepreneur?: Read through as a class and give students time to research entrepreneurs. Decide if students will work independently or in pairs or small groups. o Brainstorming a Product or Service: Support your students as they complete the mind-map to think of a product or service they could sell. Ask questions to get them thinking of ideas. Once they have decided, they complete the page to draw and describe their idea. o Costs to Start a Business: Model a sample product and its costs, then let your students complete this task for their business idea. Encourage them to recycle and reuse items whenever possible: the less they spend, the more profit they can make! o Making the Product: Remind your students about writing instructions. They can include temporal words like first, next, and finally. Then give them class time to make products (some can also be done at home). Decide how much money your students will bring to the fair (and if you will use real money or pretend). I recommend $5. Students need to know this before they can price their item. o Pricing: Give students time to price their product and explain their rationale. o Advertising: Students will create advertisements for their products. You could bring in magazines or show online ads to notice key features: bright, happy, aspirational images with short, catchy phrases and features. You can post the ads around the classroom before the fair. Give students the pretend money (or they bring real money from home) and let them shop for each other’s items. They can make change and keep a tally of sales. o Calculating Profit: Walk students through the profit calculation step-by-step. o Reflection: Finally, give students time to reflect on the entire process.

Unions Simulation Teacher Guide Hello and thank you so much for purchasing my Unions Simulation! My students have really enjoyed this, and I have enjoyed seeing the concepts and familiar battle lines come to life. I hope your students enjoy it too! The lesson is designed to have a warm up, a goal statement, an agenda slide, a (very) brief overview of work conditions and famous strikes, then the instructions to the simulation, and then finally a quick exit ticket to cement major ideas. In general for the simulation, students are divided into one of three groups: bosses, strike-breakers, and union leadership. Each with their own desired outcome or goal. Begin by walking students through the warm-up, goal statement, agenda, and mini-lecture to refresh their minds on the era in question. To start the game , prompt the “Bosses” group to announce how much they plan to cut wages by. If needed, try to encourage the bosses to announce a pay cut in the range of $10-12/hour. This is a number that is acceptable to the replacement workers, but unacceptable to union leadership–starting conflict Next round, prompt replacement labor to negotiate with the bosses. Prompt the Union group to decide whether the pay cut is “acceptable” and if not, what actions could be taken. From there, let the simulation play out until it reaches an organic conclusion. My classes have ended a few different ways– the union getting arrested for threats of bombs, the unions accepting a pay cut to $13/hour, replacement labor being hired at $11/hour after several set-backs, etc. The key is students realizing the tenuous relationship between unions and their bosses, and union members and replacement labor. At the conclusion of the activity get students back in their designated seat, discuss the activity, and administer the exit ticket. Elapsed Time: Perfect Day Math Project with Time Intervals

When teaching elementary students about elapsed time, make it personal and fun! This easy-to-use math project lets students in grades 3-6 learn about measuring the duration of time (time intervals) as they plan their perfect day. Students learn what elapsed time is and practice calculating it with a sample schedule of a teacher’s perfect day (don't worry, I included a Target run AND a nap!). Then they create their own perfect 15-hour day and calculate the elapsed time of each of their 10 activities. They can write elapsed times in hours and minutes (1 hour and 35 minutes) or in minutes only (95 minutes). They cross-check their math by adding up all 10 elapsed times and seeing if they equal the total awake time of their day (15 hours). They can use a variety of strategies to calculate elapsed time: subtraction, counting on, counting back, benchmarks, and/or number lines. Grades to Use With: This math project is designed for students in grades 3-6 who are learning about elapsed time and practicing calculating more challenging time intervals. In the USA, this is in Common Core Standards in the third grade and in British Columbia, Canada, it is addressed in Grade 5. Zombie Government Teacher Simulation Guide Thanks for your support in getting this product! I worked hard to make it a flexible and fun adaptation of the activity I made for my classroom. Don’t hesitate to adapt the activity to best mesh with your classroom. The purpose of this activity is to demonstrate to students how difficult group decision making is, how tricky insurgent groups can be, and how community needs like food, water, education, and entertainment can quickly be neglected when safety concerns are major factors. Each day students will be in their small groups making decisions about their government. You, as the facilitator, act as a kind of game manager. Some groups will find making decisions very easy, others will struggle with basics such as who is in charge? As a general rule of thumb, I make announcements mid-class every day, like a newspaper of the simulation. I can use this opportunity to individualize the conditions within the various groups, or to make things harder on groups that are finding the task easy. See the following page for ideas I’ve used in the past. Here are some general ideas on “events” that could spring up in each QZ: -- Imposter! One of the group members is known to be working with the Fireflies, but it is unclear who (approach a student before class to let them know) -- Food crisis! Rations are short, and it is unclear how to feed the population -- Road blocks! The Fireflies have blocked roads in order to combat the curfew. Now trucks, tanks, and vehicles cannot move throughout the city -- Tainted water! The diseased fungus has entered the water supply! How will the group let their residents know, and provide a solution? -- Assassination! The group leader has been taken out by the Fireflies. How will the group respond? -- An Olive Branch! The Fireflies have proposed a peace treaty, so long as they can have an equal say in all government decisions. If the group has a leader, they will now have 1 Government leader, and 1 Firefly leader. If they have a 5 person council, they will now have a 10 person council (half Fireflies), etc. -- And anything else you can think of! The more creativity the more the game sticks with students. Periodic Table: Element Baseball Cards Project

This is a great activity to help get students excited about the periodic table of elements! Students can work independently or in groups to research an element from the periodic table. On the front of the card, they will include images of the element, its name, and its symbol. On the back of the card, they will complete research to discover the element’s “statistics” including: Atomic number and atomic mass Electron configuration (including a diagram) Family Melting and boiling points History of discovery Uses and fun facts Then students can present their cards to the rest of the class so everyone learns about several different elements. Grades to Use With: This project is great for the middle grades (5-8) when the periodic table and elements are first introduced. It could also be used in a high school special education classroom. Standards: This project can help support the knowledge required for this standard. Once students understand the configuration of elements, they can use this knowledge to learn about simple molecules. NGSSMS-PS1-1 Develop models to describe the atomic composition of simple molecules and extended structures. Emphasis is on developing models of molecules that vary in complexity. Examples of simple molecules could include ammonia and methanol. Examples of extended structures could include sodium chloride or diamonds. Examples of molecular-level models could include drawings, 3D ball and stick structures, or computer representations showing different molecules with different types of atoms. Assessment does not include valence electrons and bonding energy, discussing the ionic nature of subunits of complex structures, or a complete depiction of all individual atoms in a complex molecule or extended structure. If you're searching for a novel approach to teach your middle schoolers about ancient history, the Become a Sumerian Brick Builder will surely captivate them. Explaining to my 6th grade students that the Sumerians were pioneers in brick building made little sense to them until they experienced it firsthand. They were tasked with creating their own mud bricks just as the ancient Sumerians did, and this tangible exercise enabled them to appreciate the intricate challenges these early brick builders faced. They delighted in bringing their homemade bricks to class and collaboratively constructing a Ziggurat. Their most favorite part, unsurprisingly, was the demolition of their creation. Rather than merely giving lectures, assigning textbook readings, and having students answer questions — which can be dull and off-putting — this activity stimulates active learning. The project incorporates a written assignment that students complete independently, which can be utilized for both History and English Language Arts grading. We are all aware that many students forget learned material shortly after they've been tested on it. This interactive project, however, is bound to leave a lasting impression, instilling knowledge they will carry with them long after they leave your class.
